Fabric belts of 500 rounds were found mid 1916 on some Fokker E's. The Germans had disintegrating links by April 1916 on a Fokker E.III captured by the French and a British copy was ready by June 1916 however they were unpopular (weight?) and MvR was using fabric belts when he died. Since Bill and Matt, both old hands, have both made comment I'd like to add a few words from a four year denizen. Please feel free to delete this without reading, or flame me off list but... The list, while still of good spirit, has been infected for a year now with an awful lot of off topic detritus I realise that I've been a bad boy in this regard myself, so, despite the fact I've missed it by more than half a year, I'm making some New Year resolutions: 1. I will not start, nor continue an off topic thread. If I want to partake, I'll go off line and spare everyone else my comments. 2. I *like* the humour that lightens many of the listmembers posts, but I'll never respond on list except in the context of an on topic post - perhaps as a humourous aside in a review, or comment on a review. 3. No "me too" posts. If I really want a xerox copy of an article offered by someone I'll go off list and ask direct. No more "me too" welcomes to new members either. One or two members can respond on list, but if I wasn't first ,I'll go off list. 4 No one line answers with 50 lines of quoted text either. Some of you guys have limited mailbox space. 5 No drifting topics. If I change the subject in a post I'll change the subject line too. For example "Murderous Prussian Bastard (WAS Richtofens Sock Colours)" 6. I won't talk about 60's bands on account of back then I was sniffing glue for kicks and now I sniff it by accident. Either way I forgot all about.........errr. 7 I won't discuss Golden Age biplanes on list at all. Two years ago we voted on making that era part of the list charter and turned it down. Despite my liking Harts and Furies and fat little Boeings with yaller wings, I'll take that off list after the "feeler" message, just like we decided 8 I'll do my best to keep my sense of perspective. There will always be off topic posts, and some should always be welcome ("I'M A DAD !!" etc) so I won't get all bitter when I see a brief exchange with some list relevance. After all, this is meant to be fun for all of us, and my being a tight arse can ruin others fun as much as endless drivel would ruin mine. 9 Because I'm Australian, I don't have a constitutional guarantee of free speech. Because I don't much like being thought a member of the "Me First" generation I don't assume what rights I do have outweight what responsibility I have for others. So I'll never, ever, post anything I want to simply on the basis that "I have a right to say whatever I want" I *do* like you guys and want to be a good citizen, so even if I feel like ripping a few arms off, I suppose you'll get a polite response. Okay guys. I'm off to take my Valium. Feel free to use or abuse my resolutions. I haven't seen them side by side, but I've seen both and built one and there are differences in detail and outline which make it seem unlikely. OTOH the problems I had with the MPM (too wide interior, too high engine fit, too wide etched rudder bar) have been echoed by Jeff Wilson in his 1/48 Flashback review, so it doesn't seem unlikely that a pantograph (or more likely the same set of working drawings scaled up/down) might be involved somewhere. WOW!!! If these guys continue to release kits of this quality at the rate they are releasing them, and if they learn valuable lessons with each release, then Hasegawa will want to look seriously over their shoulders and begin to sweat a little. I hear the off topic Il-2 Stormoviks are very good as well, and having been bowled over by the finesse of the Pfalz, I'm quite ready to believe it. So now to the query... Surely these kits can't be limited run (in the sense of that term that we all understand). The lack of flash, the finesse of the moulding, the size of the sprues and gates and the overall sense of quality just screams that these are mainstream products. Any comments? If these are anything to go by, then '98 is going to be the year I switch categorically to 1/72 (sorry Mick, but that'll make Matt think he has a convert...). The nine they release this year (5 more still to come) will keep me happy until the middle of '99, and I can't wait to see what they've got planned after that. So far all Toko's I have (and I have a lot :-)) are to the same standards - although the Il-2's lack in cockpit. If the Sopwith LCT turns out as great as the LaGG-3 (which builds into five separates "types") then this will be the WW1 kit of the year. > Surely these kits can't be limited run (in the sense of that > term that we all understand). Any comments? >From what I understand, these are "mainstream", but just from a company "not as well known" as Tamigawa. However, I prefer Toko to Tamigawa anyday. > If these are anything to go by, then '98 is going to be the year > I switch categorically to 1/72 (sorry Mick, but that'll make > Matt think he has a convert...). A DH2 perhaps, or an FB5, maybe an Eindecker or Bristol > monoplane, or the definitive Dr.1 or Camel? I sent both by snail- and e- mail my want list. Any guess as to the number one want? :-) However, I would like to see an Albatros D.III or D.V before any of the others you came up with... BTW, the Hawkeye Dr.I is out, and if you don't mind the price, it is *the* definitive 1/72nd Dr.I. Oh yea, Mick? :-P``` > Ahhh, such pleasing thoughts. No doubt. Let's go Toko: let's see many more WW1's (oh, and keep with the WW2 VVS as well...:-)). Ended up paying $16.50 - but hey, I've been looking for ages now and am not upset with it getting this high. When this arrives I'll have 4 of the 6. Still looking for the Bleriot and Deperdussin - if you see any please let me know!
