So I've got two MS monoplanes on the way (and a pair of Toko Pfalz's) and I've signed myself aboard the list. Many thanks Matt. My name is Jeff, I'm 32 this year and I live in Australia. I've been back modelling for a bit over two years (started again with a Smer DH2), and whilst I've gone through all eras and scales in that time, I'm coming back to 1/72 and 1/48 WWI primarily. I've got a wonderfully understanding girlfriend who likes the "little ones with two wings" more anyway, so that fits nicely with my preferences. Gotta be careful when using this book- some of the airplanes in it are done pretty accurately, but, as in the case of the Albatros, such elementary goofs as showing two spars in the lower wing. An interesting little historical tickle is provided by a note on the plans that credits a reader for spotting this mistake. The reader in question was responding to the first part of the Albatros plans published in Model Airplane News during WW II. The cockpit and other details appear to be made up from pure air. Some plans in this book , such as the Jenny set, are great. The D VII drawings by Nieto have been knocked in alot of reviews, but the more I look at them, the more I think they're not that bad except the top view- a little pudgy behind the cockpit, and maybe a little fat in the rear part of the fudelage side view. Good to hear you bought the Toko Pfalz D.XII. A nice little kit, but pales by comparison to the Nieuport 11. :-) > My name is Jeff, I'm 32 this year and I live in Australia. I think the entire sentence comes out "back to 1/72 and 1/48 WWI primarliy." You're lucky that you have a girlfriend that supports you. :-) > nu: 1/76 Airfix Mk.I "Male" or Toko Pfalz D.XII There's a lot of work to be done to the Airfix tank to accurize it. LMK if you really want to know what. > sitnf: 1/72 Zlinek Morane Saulnier (who makes the nicest/best > seats and guns for something like this. Brass, resin or metal?) For a seat, you may be on your own. I'm lucky enough to own the very dated (and out of production) Merlin white metal seats, and since I'm stingy with those I used the Merlin seat meant for the MoS as a "template" to scratchbuild my own. It's not difficult; I just used putty for the leather seat and while the putty was drying "punched" holes in the putty with a toothpick. Fotocut makes seat backs, but I don't think they have any "low" seats; I think they're all "high backs". If you stick with the Type I, and don't convert to a Type N, you have plenty of options for the gun. The way the kit is designed you have two halves to the gun, to be glued on either end of the "front cockpit" to make a whole. Since the entire area on the "real" machine was hollow, and the gun fit through this (you're confused, aren't you :-)) I hollowed this area out and will use a Rosemont Vickers resin gun. You'll also want to replace the engine, if you pedantic. The kit supplied one is a little anemic for my tastes, so that's being replaced with a Rosemont resin 110hp Le Rhone replacement. I think you can get away with using the kit engine - if you're not anal like me :-) - since the spinner will cover most of the area up front. Probably more than you wanted to know, eh? ;-) Matt Bittner _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Ah, yes. 'Minds me of the time about five years ago when our lead singer got us back-stage passes at an ELP concert. Chatted with Carl Palmer for about an hour (real nice guy, and absolutely *tiny*, which you wouldn't at all suspect seeing him drum!). Talked a bit with Greg Lake, but he was lots more busy with the babes (yup, a true bass player ). The highlight of the evening, though, was when Emerson put in a brief appearance (he'd done the entire two-hour show with a bad case of the flu, although you couldn't tell until you saw him up close). When I told him seeing the Brain Salad Surgery tour in '73 had made me declare a music major the next day, he just lit up in a grin and shook my hand. As for me, well, I don't know about any Mexican whore houses, but this was lots more stunning than the first time *I* had sex . Got a photo to prove it, 'cause my wife (my *bassist*, just so you know I'm not down on bassists ) snapped a shot of it. 'Course, the grin Keith had on was nothing to the bemused shit-eatin' grin I was wearing . Oh, unless you missed it, I'm a keyboard player . And to forestall another point, the babe I first had sex with wasn't her. Believe me, no comparison; after all, how many keyboard players and bassists do *you* know who stay together for 27 years? . Yeah, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks. Well, *ideally* it would mean drawings prepared by engineers involved in the design or construction of the real thing. Failing that, accurate drawings of the same sort prepared after the fact by someone who knew the real thing. Preferably standard plan views, rather than the more common popular isometric or exploded-plan views. Or did you mean to imply that "engineering drawings" was a laugh in regard to aircraft of that vintage? Wow! All mine said was something about some Army guy named "General Page Fault." Congrats, anyway. But remember the Dilbert strip about Dilbert's patent, where the smell of a patent began to draw co-workers wanting to attach themselves to the patent? Several folks (including myself) will suggest to buy direct from the publisher, since domestic sources of these books charge premium prices.
