Message-ID: <199807092336.BAA15236@login-2.eunet.no> Gents, Bob Pearson posted this almost a month ago, I returned from a work period offshore last week and started to read one months worth of postings (1300). Seems like the Kaiser was a popular target for the RFC, Tryggve Gran writes about a raid in his book "Mellem Himmel og Jord" printed in 1927. It is not mentioned in a book containing parts of his diary which was released in 1919 while he still served in the RAF. I have translated the relevant part into English: A date is not given in MHoJ, since he refers to this being the day after he attacked the Gothas based at Ingelmunster, where he strafed and bombed a Gotha trying to take off I can use the information in his diary. According to it he went on this raid to avenge Mackey on 21st October 1917. On the 22nd he flew over Ingelmunster again to admire the havoc he had created. The same evening 101Sq received orders for an all out attack on Roulers. An informer had sent a message to the British forces telling them that the Kaiser had arrived and would stay the night at Roulers. Gran remembered by heart the close connection his family had with the Kaiser and the assistance he had been granted while preparing to fly across the North Sea. He felt it was his duty to avoid taking part in an attack at the Kaiser himself and informed Major Fiennes about his problem. His advice was for Gran to drive to the HQ and bring forward his plea to the commanding officer. Gran went to see the Colonel and after receiving compliments for what he had achived over Ingelmunster, was allowed to present his problem to the officer. After thinking about it for a few moments, the Colonel was in no doubt - "You will not take part in an Imperial bombardment tonight, instead you will join me and the General for a Royal dinner." Gran heard his squadron mates fly towards Roules, wishing them all the best, but that their bombs would not harm the Kaiser. His wishes came true, the Kaiser got away from Roules, but the bombs were not wasted. A number of German officers were killed, including the governor in Belgium. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Gran wrote his books in a version of Norwegian which differs quite a lot from my normal language so it was awkward to translate, still I think it could be of interest to the listmembers. The silver fern leaf on the fin ISN'T attributed to Keith Caldwell as all other references state - in fact the fern leaf was painted on while A8898 was at No.56 sqn and the mount of F J Horrell who was also from New Zealand. They also have a profile depicting it as an 'A' Flight a/c with red colouring, whereas others state it to be a 'B' Flight a/c with yellow - guess its time to haul out the old C&C(GB) articles on 60 Sqn and see what is in there . . . . . . . . Well C&C(GB)12/1:39 has Caldwell using it from 20 August 1917-3 September, with Sherwood using it in the 3 weeks prior to that. And as the markings were ordered changed on 26th August, Caldwell at least flew it in the fancy markings for a few days before replacement witha white disc was carried out.
