The resin ones are, in my oppinion slightly inferior to the lead ones, strictly from a durability point of view. I've chipped the edge of more than one putting the O-ring on. The lead ones never broke. The detail of the resin is good however, and they're still the best game in town for wheels. -Al =============================================================================== Allan Wright Jr. | You fell victim to one of the 'classic' blunders! Or was the dark green paint > applied directly to the unpainted surfaces? Hi Jeff, Without any refs in front of me, I'll put my head in the ring on this one. When I did my Sierra 1/48 Phonix D.II, I checked all the sources - Datafile, FMP AH books, Profile etc - and came to the conclusion that the green paint was applied by soaking a sponge or cloth in paint and splodging it directly on the CDL. I reproduced this (Linke Crawford's "L") machine by spraying CDL where appropriate then using an olive green colour (can't remember which) and loading a mop-headed brush then stippling against some kitchen roll paper. I then stippled the brush over the CDL. This was done several times until little CDL could be seen - more of a texture of lighter and darker greens - which to my eyes looks spot-on against pictures of the aeroplane. (Try it out on some old mule first.) > One more question about the swirl/sworl controversy. Someone > mentionedd A/G Summer/Autumn Leaf Camoflague. Is this there term for > the mottle on the Phonix fighters or is this another variant of sworl? > Autumn Leaf (and Summer Leaf) are totally different from sworl. Similar in effect to the above (but different colours and not so dense) , they consist of yellow/brown/green splodges (browner for Sutumn, greener for Summer). IMHO transfers will not produce this effect as well as "dry" brush splodging. I'm doing almost a 100% scratch build, but I bought a couple of Glencoe 1/54th Austin racecar models to use as a base. That way I don't have to scratch build leaf springs, wheels, etc. I've started with sampson's staff car, since it is lightly armoured and will need the least amount of rivets and connversion from the austin. I've already fabricated the radiator armoured 'box' and the firewall shield for the passengers. Now I'm working on the passenger compartment. While I'm at it I'm modifying a 25mm artillerist into a driver that can be put behind the wheel or removed. I'll probably eventually work out a gunner for the rear mounted MG too. I need to use up a roll of film to get it developed before my trip, I think I'll take some pictures and do an on-line diary of the scratch build. I only wish I thought of doing this a bit sooner. Oh, well, I'm going to do several of these, the next time I'll start from step 1. After the staff car, I'll start on an armoured lorry for carrying marines. With one of those and the staffcar I'll have wuite a nice set. TTYL, Allan P.S. But of perhaps more interest to list members is kit 7249, Aviatik C.1 ! I know nothing about these kits, I just saw them on Hannant's site, and thought others might be interested. I will back Sandy on his posting (being a resident A/H nut). I will add that much of the camouflage was applied locally, at Flik level, so I am sure there is a lot of variation to be found. About the only thing to do is look at available photos and see just how much CDL shows (if any) on your intended "victim", toss a coin (heads=green, tails=brown) and have at it, using the technique Sandy described. The camo could also be green over brown, brown over green, so try a few combos and see what strikes your fancy. Your guess is pretty much as good as ours (or the judges'). Enjoy. Have Fun!! Roughly a 20 min. drive from my house. There are roughly 40 or so interesting 20's, 30's and 40's antique aircraft based here. This should be fun. Having seen this in person (Ken has one Paul) and after modifying the drawings in the FMP book appropriately, as well as measuring the parts the "old fashion way", I can tell you this is an accurate model of a *prototype*. Yep, Dakoplast modeled a prototype. However, it's extremely easy to convert it to a production machine. Granted, Ken has my FMP book, but if you show up to the meeting next month, I may be able to bring it along. Just LMK. Plus, the FMP book has a few profiles in it as well. I know of no web sites, although I really haven't gone looking.
