My visit to the Museo del Aire Message-ID: <01BD9BDF.7C9E3FC0@fei1-p14.telepac.pt> Hi guys, after almost 4 days without getting a message from any of you, I asked = brother Matt was going on and to my dismay he informed that there was = nothing wrong with The List and I had to conclude that somehow I had = gotten killed by the list administrating software. Did this happen to = any of you too? Now that I've resubscribed, time to do a short report on what I saw at = the Museo del Aire in Madrid. The museum collection is spread through 3 hangars and an outside display = area. Unfortunately I was very tight on time and could only spend 1.5 = hours there so there's still plenty of reasons to justify another visit = sometime in the future. The first Hall is the most interesting for list members since there are = some very well done replicas of some WW1 vintage aircraft. BTW I don't = know if Spain was active in WW1. Any of you want to elaborate on this = subject?=20 So on display there are replicas of a Caudron G-3, a very nice Fokker = C-III (looks like a DVII with a longer cockpit opening (2 places) and an = engine with a front grille a la Spad VII/XIII, a smashing Bristol = fighter painted in a very vivid shade of green (quite a change from = PC10), a Nieuport IV-G. Occupying a corner of the hangar is the replica = of the Dornier WALL Plus Ultra on which Alberto's uncle did the first = south atlantic crossing using only one aircraft (the original, BTW is in = Argentina. Don't we have someone there too?). Then there are two = original aircraft that are absolutely gorgeous: these are 2 CASA Breguet = XIX "Jesus Del Gran Poder" which has to its credit quite a number of = interesting flights like Seville to Bahia (Brazil) in March 1929 and a = South america tour. One of the beautiful notes about this a/c is that it = has its fuselage to the rear of the cockpit covered with paintings of = ladies in several spanish regional costumes as well as with other = markings commemorating some of the flights it has done. Below the lower = wing is the name of the aircraft in a very nice "font" and below the = right upper wing is a table with the most important flights the aircraft = did, listing the origin/destination, distance and duration of flight. = Super stuff to recreate on a model. The other casa Breguet is called Quatro Vientos (the museum is actually = located very near the airfield of quatro vientos, so I was told) and it = was used on the first crossing of the Central Atlantic from Seville to = Camaguey (Cuba) in 1933.=20 On this hall there is also a number of other a/c like two casa 1111 = (spanish He 111) an immaculate t-6 and a miles hawk major . I won't go into detail on what's on the other 2 halls but to bring = things more to an on-topic stance on entering hangar 3 there's a Fokker = DR1 replica (guess what colours is it painted in.... Sandy if ever you = go there look straight on until you pass the first a/c on your left :-) = one of 3 that were built in Germany, in 1975, by a firm called = "Williams" for a movie called "The Red Baron" and this one has an = original clerget engine, so the identifying plaque says. It's finished = as 425/17 and is red with undersurfaces in blue (Turquoise?). On this = hangar there's also a 504 K (an original one IIRC). The rest of the Hangar is used by plenty of late 30's to early 50's a/c = with some very interesting stuff from the Spanish Civil war. The museum = choose to display some of the aircraft that were active on both sides = painted half in republican and half in nationalist colours, so you get = to see what the aircraft looked like in both schemes. (it can be strange = to look at an aircraft painted this way but if you look from the side = you won't notice it.). Among here you can also see 2 examples of the = spanish version of the 10thingie (So now we have Sandy looking to the = right side of the Hall and Matt looking to the left ;-). On hall 2 there are some La Cierva Auto giros (one based on a AVRO 504K = fuselage of which there is also at least another one at The French Le = Bourget Museum) and a nice collection of engines and other stuff. On the outside area there are some interesting a/c too like a Do 24 HD5 = that was used until the mid 70's for SAR and a collection of more = contemporary tail burners like a couple o phantoms or a Mig 23 and a Su = 22 ex RDA. There's a small souvenir shop where you can buy some paper models and a = couple of interesting publications. I bought me a book called Galeria de = Aviones de la Guerra Civil Espanola (1936-39) "Gallery of the a/c of the = Spanish Civil war" which has colour profiles of most if not all the a/c = that were used in the conflict along with some notes on the technical = specs of the a/c, the way they were used and the way they were painted. = Very nice. And so the story ends. Very much worth a visit specially since the admission price is but 100 = Pesetas (less than 1 USD). Will go there again sometime in the future = with more time to spare. Guys, sorry if you find reading this boring but I though you might like = to know what is there to see in places most of you will probably not = have an easy access to. Is Zulis Greek or ? > Zulis is actually Latvian (both parents born there, escaped the Soviets during that second disagreement occasionally referred to on this list). This brings up another topic, which probably should be flagged as "off-topic" but which might interest you and maybe some other between-wars people on this list. I have a book entitled "Of Struggle and Flight" by Karlis Irbits, and it is the history of aviation in Latvia. Little happened there before WWI, and it was written in 1986, so not much was said about post-1940, but the book is very well done. The author was, himself, an aircraft designer in Latvia and the book is loaded with many three-view line drawings of some very obscure aircraft, and many detail drawings of how control linkages work, etc. Lots of b&w photos of aircraft acquired immediately after WWI, including Ansaldo SVAs, Sopwith Camels, Fairey Seals and a Nieuport 24bis, all in Latvian colours. The book is long out of print and I suspect it has become quite rare (I noticed Insignia magazine were running an ad begging for a copy from someone). If there is anything about the planes of this era and country that someone would like me to try and find, please just let me know off-list. I also have a list of all aircraft types flown in the Latvian Aviation Regiment and Naval Service from 1919-1940. There is an additional list of aircraft ordered but not received (such as Do-22, Lysander and Hurricane), presumably because of Russia's meddling in 1940. At the risk of taking up too much space here, I have to tell you about one anecdote in the book. In the mid-20s the government released a design specification for a two-seat high-wing monoplane. Pauls Reinhards designed something which they called the "flying cigar"... primarily because the fuselage was disproportionately long. The plane was built and flown but it apparently had an engine so unreliable (Maybach) that is was a hazard to fly, and there were so many asipiring young pilots eager to fly it, that the test pilot Rinkis intentionally crashed the thing to put it out of its misery before it killed someone. Then, before any official could get any ideas about having it repaired... they roasted the remains on a bonfire. Just sounds like a classic "good old days" story to me.... Very accurate (99%) on printed text above 10pt. It is a little on the expensive side but well worth it as the frustration with having to correct "errors" is virtually eliminated. I put this in a couple of places at work - QA and Reg Affairs. I work IT for a HealthCare Manufacturer and these folks use it scan 100's pages of technical documents and standards on an almost daily basis. > Recently I received colour copies of photos I made in Prague Museum of > Technology and I'm ready to scan them and post the thumbnails to my > website. Get a good touch up package like PhotoShop and you should be able to adjust the light and shadow levels. A little expensive. Again, I put this in at work and the users are very happy. Another option here is a package I got with my scanner. Never heard of it before but have some excellent results just playing about with stuff. It's called Ulead ImagPal's v2. It's only small so I could probably send you a copy to try out (2 diskettes worth). All you need is a twain driver. May be enough for what you want. While these packages are not difficult to use they may take some time to get used to. If you need to there should be plenty of 3rd party books and training available.
