I have AFV News #7, "Medium Tanks Marks A-D". Format is much like the Profile series but it's slightly larger and contains twice as many pages. A lot of good info here. Do you want to loan it for scanning? Alternatively, I could find someone with a scanner, do it over here and shoot the data to you. Which would be better? BTW, I was an armour freak before I got into WWI aviation. WWI armour is still on topic as far as my modelling interests are concerned. I would like ALL of the scanned AFV pages (except for Armour in Profile No.1: Tank Mark IV, which I have) if possible. I tried this once after the suggestion came up, but must not have used a high enough proportion of clear flat, since it still looked like a Future finish. All this plus the usual obvious philosophical pondering on What Does It All Mean? and AND.......a review of the book Victoria Cross:WW I Airmen and Their Aircraft which mentions a certain lovely and talented artist. Bart Bandy has returned once more and this time he has turned in his trusty Sopwith Dolphin for one of those one winged, metal, Vickers-Supermarine thingeys! For those of you un-initiated I refer to the Bandy Papers by Donald Jack, the first volume being 'Three Cheers For Me'. This latest book must be at least volume seven! Highly recommended WW1 flying fiction from a Canadian perspective. As I believe Bob has gushed over these in previous postings I'll shut up now. I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to my acquiring this and I will now be moving to a new city and resubscribing under a new name - just kidding :-). However I will count all the pages later and we can then get an idea as to what is involved in copying it either as xerox or CD-ROM form. However there is nowhere near as many pages as I thought there would be - perhaps 500 to 600 at the most. All the tank pages I have been scanning have been scanned at 150dpi, which should be more than adequate for AM as well if printed out at the higher settings on your computer, and they result in a file size in the area of 600k per page. As mentioned before HTML could be an idea for a CD-ROM if Chris, Bill or someone wants to do that. However we would still need access to a CD-R to make the 25+ copies for those who contributed to the fund (I kept everyone's envelope in case I forgot to cross your name off the list, and will check on them later tonight). Most paid $15, but a few paid $10 so the fund currently sits at $200 in the bank plus another $32 that I have to add to it when I next go to the bank. TIA Charles hartc@spot.colorado.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 May 1998 10:19:46 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi'" Subject: Toko Snipe Message-ID: <199805140036.KAA06955@mimmon.mim.com.au> Hi all, Last night at a club meeting I had the chance to look a little more carefully over the Toko Snipe, with Datafile in hand. I must say that my friend (and owner of the kit) was right about the fuselage being overlong. This applies not just in laying the parts over the Datafile plans (by Col Owers BTW) but in comparison to the photos where the look is clearly way too long and slender. However the model is NOT overscale. The proportions are correct if you start at the firewall and work backwards. Fuselage profile is then correct, with cockpit opening in the proper place, wing opening likewise, footsteps correctly positioned. However, the step for the tailplane is nounted about 5mm too far aft, and the tailpost is also 5mm too far back. It seems reasonably simple to chop off the last (about) 5mm, file a new step and move the tail forward to recreate the short and dumpy look of the original. However that would leave a squared off ass end on the fuselage, so some filing, or trimming of the mating faces to get the taper right will be needed. Upper wing (the whole kit actually) is the later style, so it has the horn balance ailerons. I think the balance area is much too small and might repay some extension, however I'm also not convinced they should be quite as big as they appear on Cols Datafile plans. When I build mine (July 2016) I'll take a happy medium. Aside from that the kit looks fine in outline. The rudder/tailfin is a bit thick, but 5 minutes with a sheet of 15thou will fix that, you may question the extent of the gun decking "hump" which is narrower front-rear than the drawings, but I can't find a photo which clearly shows whether Toko or Col Owers is right. Nice kit, at A$12 (about US$7.50) it's astonishing value for money after years of struggling to get far worse kits into shape.
