I'm not trying to make excuses for the shoddy service you received, but perhaps some of the problems have to do with the X-Mas rush and all that that entails (an avalanche of orders, taking on new temporary staff to help meet the deadlines, etc.) Good luck finding the items you want at Barnes & Noble: perhaps the one near you stocks such titles, but I never seem to find anything (and I do mean anything!) at the one near me. FWIW, in the spring, I wished to purchase the book, "Spitfire: The Canadians," which had gone out of print. I called B&N w/ the info (Title, author, ISBN) and explained that it was out of print, but could they possibly get it for me anyway from warehouse stock or whatever. The lady who took my call said, "Oh sure, no problem." Three days later I received a card in the mail from B&N, informing me that the item was out of print! I then ordered it on-line from Amazon.com, and three days later the book arrived on my doorstep. So, they do come through sometimes. My first model was so long ago I don't recall what it was but I believe it was a 3 or 4 piece glider. Then I went into simple "solid models" and then to "flying models." While in the army I built a large Beechcraft (being from Wichita) staggerwing with a hefty "C" engine and "U-control." Then I got off on ship models, cars and other odds and ends and didn't do any A/C until I returned to KC after all my training in Boston (it was all ship models here) and Denver. In about 1965 I was so enamored of Peanuts and Snoopy and his Sopwith Camel, I finally went to the model store and bought a 1/72 Revell model of his (actually Brown's) Camel. After that I knew I had found a home so, like most of you, I started buying more WWI A/Cs and that with reading dozens of books on WWI aviation. I still have most of them. Did you ever read "Wind In The Wires" by Grinnell-Milne or "A Killing For The Hawks" by Fred Smith? After I built all the Revell 1/72s I could find (about 15) I drifted away from the hobby for several years and in only the last year or so have restarted when Model Expo had a big sale on 1/72 Airfix kits so I bought a bunch and am still working on them at intervals. I hope others will share their similar experiences, especially our non-USA members. While I'm thinking of it, I have a nice Celtic CD you might enjoy. If you re-send you mailing address, I'll try and get a copy out nefore Christmas. Bob Wind is the Wires is a great book. He certainly knew how to write. Same comment on Sagitarius Rising...great book written by a great writer. As far as Snoopy is concerned....when my daughter was much younger, I picked up a motorized mobile. It consisted of Snoopy on a yellow dog house(complete with roundel) being "chased" by the baron in a red triplane. The motor allowed it to turn horizontally above her bed. She swears it has warped her to this very day at the ripe old age of 12 1/2! I think that, "No Parachute," and "Sagitarius Rising" are my favorite WWI books of all time. All autobiographies by guys who were there, telling their own stories, and all three are gifted writers who can really describe what it was like to be there. Ciao! One of the early joys I remember about modelling was the start of the Airfix releases. You used to get a slip in the UK bags that gave you the address to send off to (Gadzooks it was "Haldane Place" in London - its just leapt out of my memory at me!) if any bits were missing. On the reverse of this they started to list what was available. I remember the first ones had about six kits on them - all series one -including Spitfire, Gladiator and oddities like the Saunders-Roe SR53 jet!!!!. Then things other than aircraft appeared and the slips had a thin column of subjects including some old cars (Lanchester etc), 3 figures (Lifeguard, Coldstream Guardsman, Yeoman) and small ship models (Santa Maria etc). These were all 2 shillings each. This was the only way of knowing what else was available and as soon as you opened the new release, one of the first things you did was scan the faults slip to see what else was coming out. Then you pestered the hell out of the local DIY shop to ask them to order it. Soon bigger kits arrived and the Lancaster was drooled over. When the Sunderland appeared it seemed too much to believe that something that big was actaully kitted. The faults slip got fuller and fuller and eventually there were about eight columns across the way and twenty subjects in each column before Airfix gave up being comprehensive and only listed a selection. At that point some of the magic disappeared. Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 00:03:55 -0000 From: "Sandy Adam" To: Subject: Sierra poll. May he continue to > produce quality kits. Amen Conversations with Mike Eacock showed that sometimes the cottage manufacturers will sell as few as 80 kits of a poorly chosen (marketing-wise) subject. (Lloyd C.V 1/72) If Bob is making WW1 planes again, would it not be a good idea if we polled the most sought-after kit in both 1/48 and 1/72 for vacform and see how many firm orders we would place if he made them. This would guarantee him sales uo-front and guarantee us kits we might otherwise never see. I seem to remember the Halberstadt D.II came tops in 1/48 and I for one would tell Bob to ship me one as soon as he could make one. Is it worth either a) seeing how many others would Definitely buy a 1/48 Halb D.II? b) having another poll along the lines of "I want x and I will buy y number if kits of it"? c) if somebody still has it - passing the previous "most wanted" results to Bob. We have several times hot-aired about what we would like to buy - this might be a chance to "commission" our bespoke requiremenst - what do you all think? I'll offer to collate the results and pass to Bob if you wish. I also have a built and smashed Rumpler, Actually a wreckage with a CO2 motor and an unbuilt DH4. Despite their inaccuracies, these were charming kits. It's a shame we are not likely to see these again. An interesting note, the early 60's issues had vacuform cowlings buyt the late 60's / 70's renditions had styrene cowls that made the planes nose heavy. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 11:53:31 +1100 (EST) From: Mick Fauchon To: wwi Cc: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Themes being followed /firsts Message-ID: Robert, > << (Who said you had > > to grow up?) > Apart from my good wife, who indeed!? 80) > My good wife!
