Um abraco Pedro ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 20:48:13 -0500 From: John & Allison Cyganowski To: Steve Shutt Subject: Udet's D.VII Message-ID: <346E50DD.70F6@worldnet.att.net> We have had a few very interesting viewpoints expressed with regard to this aircraft. One point in question seems to be the major color of the aircraft - Red or Black? Difficult to tell with the black and white film of the era. The same sorts of debates rage both here and in other places as to what were these colors. Case in point: Was the nose Voss's triplane dark green, black or yellow? The real answer is that we don't know for certain - unless someone who was there recorded the color in correspondence at the time. We can make some pretty safe guesses based on what we know of other aircraft that have survived, or that have been written about. Most sources show this ship as red. If you paint your model red you will be in the mainstream thinking. If you would like to be at the center of controversy, do like The Stones recommend and "Paint it Black"! Now it has been stated in our forum as a supporting argument that this unit had black noses, despite the DML directions. If fact the Smer kit's painting instructions for Udet's ship show it with a black nose. Unless you can find a picture of this aircraft, I'd say it was plausible either way. Personally, I might be tempted to paint it black only because I think it looks good that way. As for the top wing, the Smer directions show it as Lozenge, the DML kit directions call out stripes I believe. Again, in the absence of any photgraphic evidence, chhose what you think most plausible. Of course 10 minutes after the dullcoat sealer has dried some smartypants will come up with a source that shows you exactly what a hash you've made of the color scheme! Perhaps some old Cross and Cockade that has been put on CD rom.... Loreena McKennitt is well known to those of us in the know. ;-) Seriously, I'm on an email list that deals with all forms of female musicians - mainly current, sort of popular ones (like Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Kate Bush, et. al.) - in all types of genres. I've been a huge fan (she's one of my personal musical "goddesses") since discovering _the mask and mirror_. IMHO, _the mask and mirror_ is my favorite, although I don't own _The Book of Secrets_, nor _Elemental_. Pedro, I would like to hear Madredeus. While waiting for the books from Barry and Riordan to arrive I have been searching my resources and I have only found two photos of the Sablatnig SF5. One is in WS 13/1 while the other is in the Putnam German Aircraft book. This shows a curiously camouflaged SF5 799 on page 536. Does anyone have any guesses as to what these colours may be? I think they may possibly be either blue or gray over CDL and light varnished ply (or just blue and gray or . . . ). If anyone is interested I now have 4 W.12, 4 W.29,1 W.4 and 1 SF5 profiled with more due under the paint brush. As usual emailed copies are available for the asking.
