Whether you do or do not want to keep flying old aeroplanes, the insurance (crowd protection) is going to become astronomical as more of them crash. This will likely be the terminal factor rather than airworthiness per se. 2. Don't you think CIC Strike Command just got fed up hearing all those old boys with handlebar moustaches and undone top buttons rabbiting on about downing Bfs and decided this was the last chance he had of getting his own back for missing the BoB 50 years ago? 3. Could we all please not keep repeating previous mails and adding our bits to the bottom - mail server space is not unlimited and we have lost members in the past through this. I don't have any on hand, but I know that all remaining Superscale decals have been purchased by MMD (Squadron's wholesale distributorship). They stated that they may run off limited re-issues if demand exists for certain sheets. You may be able to get the decals through Squadron's mail order. Paul A. While they may be rare and valuable. I applaude those who own 'em and fly 'em! The key is maintenance and qualified pilots. Replicas are another way of allowing folks to see what antique planes look like in the air without risking the originals. However, to really get the full effect of the original they need to be built as the originals were built and use original engines. Not always practical. I appreciate Brian Coughlin building a D-VIII and using a rotary! The bottom line, IMO, is maintain them and fly them. I am sure glad a fellow did. Otherwise I would not have had the chance to ride in the nose of a B-25! Doug -- ------------------------------------------------- 'I am a traveler of | Douglas R. I work from home a lot now with e-mail and net connections to my Edinburgh Office. At the moment I am sitting in my home office in Crieff which is on the edge of the Scottish Highlands next to Loch Turret where a superb distillery produces Glen Turret single malt (highly recommended!). We are about 10 miles from Gleneagles Hotel and Golf Courses and I see golden eagles at least every two or three days. If you saw the Liam Neeson film Rob Roy, you may remember the castle with ornate grounds where RR and the villain quarelled - that was filmed about 2 miles from here at Drummond Castle. Until the end of the 80's we had the Strathallan collection of aircraft situated about 8 miles away - but unfortunately that was sold off. I used to hear piston engines and look up to see a Mosquito doing a 633 Squadron run up the Strathearn glen! Not to mention the Spitfire, Hurricane, Hudson, Lysander, Yak3, Avenger, etc, etc. now alas long gone. Anyway sorry to take up mail space off-topic but the question was asked! Yes it is pretty idyllic here (if wet) and if anybody plans visiting Caledonia at any time let me know if I can help and hopefully meet some of you guys. In fact, since the warbird movement really took off in the 60s, more of these old beasts exist now than 35 years ago.Look at situation regarding FW-190s- just few years ago it was thought to be confined to just a few dust-gatherers in museums- now several are a-building to flight status. Grounding is no guarantee of continued existance.Stuff happens.Where's the great ancient Library at Alexandria today?Henry the VIII destroyed the monasteries.Even museums do their part in this destruction- look at that tarted up "thing" the NASM calls an "Albatros".It's a beautiful and bastardized collection of old and new material.Much better had they cleaned and preserved what was left, displayed that and built a replica of what the thing looked like in its heyday. As it sits now, it's as if they found Cleopatra's body, covered it in fake flesh and put lipsick on it.If a something like a genuine Fokker triplane ever turns up, I hope NASM never gets their paws on it.Destruction comes in many forms. What makes a place like Chino so great is the grease and oil and smell and noise- it's alive- the flying machines have NO DUST! In some cases of extreme rarity, yeah, it would be nice to ensure as much as possible the continued existance of at least a dead hulk, maybe to be used as a pattern for an accurate and flyable repro. John Allison is one of the four pilots qualified to fly this aircraft in a display sequence and has been for several years. I believe he also flies BoB Flight Spitfires as a junior officer to Sq.Ldr Paul Day. (CO, BoB Flight). (Please don't >answer, Al will ex-communicate me) Well, personally, I'd rather see modern, reasonably faithful, replicas flying about (less likely to disintegrate due to electrolytic interaction of airframe bits, but thats for another list), than to see a pilot endangering himself, and perhaps a few folks on the ground, trying to put the original "heavy iron" thorugh the air. I'm very interested to finally see some of these Me-262 replicas take to the air. I would like to clarify a position I stated earlier. I do not doubt the flying capabilities of the chap who crunched the 109 a few days ago. I'm sure he is a most capable pilot. The thing is he doesn't fly Me 109s, or Spitfires for that matter, on a daily basis. There are idiosyncracies to all things technical (everyone on this list should be familiar with that), and when that bit of technology has the potential to kill the operator its best to stay in control of the beast, however un-exciting your moves might look from the ground. We had a good example of what one can do with a warbird practically in my back yard here in Colorado. A restored F-86 was being put through its paces for an airshow crowd. I saw it and it was a splendid display. Trouble was, while recovering from a loop the pilot discovered that the ground was quite a few feet closer to him than he had believed. The pilot had a few thousand hours in F-86s, so he knew what he was doing, still he made a mistake. Fortunately, there was only one casualty to this accident which rendered a beautiful and original vintage jet into a lot of pieces smaller than my keyboard. Soapbox mode off. My apologies to those who are tiring of this topic. I have Jane's Fighting Aircraft of WW1 - which is whole of 1919 edition with added detail from 1914, 16, 17, 18 (there was no 1915 edition). It is portrait format about 15" x 12". I got it last autumn in one of the UK "Bargain Books"chain and was I think remaindered at 10GBP. I also have Jane's atw Aircraft 1919 - which is landscape format and about 9" x 15". It Obviously includes less than the above and is more awkward to handle. I have seen this in bookshops for 30GBP plus. I would go for the reprint if you are interested in the contents and only the 1919 volume if you are more interested in collecting books! My 2p for what it is worth!
