Having watched the activities of the indefatigable Mr. Cussler and his group, NUMA, here in Galveston over the last ten or twelve years, I have seen that there is often a substantial difference between the tone of their press releases and the actual archaeological results they produce. They have had a few notable successes -- the discovery of the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley being one of them -- but those are the exception rather than the rule. ---------> Andy Hall Andrew and Rebecca Hall Galveston, Texas ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 00:46:55 -0400 (EDT) From: BStett3770@aol.com To: wwi Subject: New Photo Message-ID: <970929220347_1698138248@emout12.mail.aol.com> Hi Gang Just put up a new photo of the month on our web site. The group I have always heard about as looking for Nungesser's plane, etc., was TIGHAR, led by Rick Gillespie. Yes, the same group that has been looking for Amelia in the Pacific. The last I heard they had found nothing on Nungesser. I talked with Bill Nungesser several years ago. He said they had a witness who heard an engine overhead at the appropriate time, but nothing had come of it. They had thought they would find an engine if nothing else, but still nothing has turned up. I'm surprised Lothar von Richthofen didn't claim him as a kill then - hearing overhead seems to have been his main criterion for claiming an Ace! If youcan find it there's the Albatros volume on Guynemer - also fairly easily available over here is the old Christopher Campbell "Aces and aircraft of WW1" which looks a bit naff from the cover, but is in fact rather good and covers Navarre, Guynemer, Nungesser and Fonck. Also old but good in a general coverage is Joseph Phelan's "Aircraft and Flyers of 1st WW". I played on the highest realism level (except midair collisions) and never backed up the game, starting over from the beginning whenever I died. However, when being the Germans, I never could survive long after the introduction of the SE5a, you CAN'T run and you can't hide either. I'd always wind up playing a second rate Voss imitation with four or sometimes even eight SE5a's zooming around me and I would die. Thus, I never got challenged by the higher-ranking Allied aces. As an Allied fighter pilot, though, I would get my trusty SPAD and I could always run away, if nothing else! Yours, James D. Gray nr. The 900 Days nl. This report indicated that TIGHAR was satisfied that they had indeed found the right plane bits. I think that subsequent activites of TIGHAR looking for remains of Amelia has overshadowed their earlier accomplishment.
