I am blessedwith semi-frequent sightings of '17s, '24s, C-47s (a lot), T-6s, 51s and occasionally a '29 or C-46, because of the restoration work being done there, and static "shows" held by World Jet. The only on-topic bird I've seen there is a repro Dr.I with wheel brakes, steerable tail wheel, and "flat four" modern engine. It's very pretty, even if it is red. (Of course :^( ) Have Fun!! There is an old Stearman finished up in blue and yellow training colors that flies around here. Looks very nice. The CAF's B-29 Fifi was here a few weeks ago. Two of my friends won tickets through a radio station to fly on it round trip from Lincoln, NE to Des Moines, IA. They said it was an experience that they will never forget. Lucky dogs... Paul A. Look for a larger engine and three blade prop installed. The landing gear can be lenghtened and Zero type strut covers installed. The canopy can be made to look like a Zero canopy. The rudder has fillets added to the bottom to make it look like the Zero fuselage. You would have to sit them side by side to see the differences. Most of these aircraft are painted in the light grey, black cowling 1941 Naval scheme. The CAF Tora, Tora, Tora group flies two of these aircraft in their Pearl Harbor show routine with two Val's (BT-13) and two Kates (combination T-6 and BT-13). All of these aircraft are very convincing replicas, especially the Kates. As far as Zeros go there are only two airworthy aircraft. One is Ed Maloney's and the other is the CAF with an American engine. The Planes of Fame Zero has its original engine. If you saw either of these, then you got a real treat. It's worth tracking it down for some pictures. I asked if it was a replica, and he said he thought it was the real thing. He commented that the owner had remarked on how light and agile it was, compared to other a/c he had flown. I've put in a call to the owner, and am hoping he will phone me back. Of course I shall ask him about the authenticity of the plane, from whence it came to him, which marque it is, what year it was built, type of engine, and ask about shooting a roll of film at it. Any other questions you'd like me to ask, if you can e-mail me before I talk to him? Aviation Usk may also have 'em. Carlos ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 16:58:02 -0700 From: Charles Hart To: wwi Subject: books for sale Message-ID: Greetings All, Recently, a sale of WW I aviation books and artifacts has come to my attention. This is apparently an estate sale of the collections of Bill and Iver Penttinen of New York. While this material has been for sale for a few months, it has not been widely publicized, I thought that it might be of interest to the group. The list runs twelve 11"x17" xeroxed pages. Most of the books are of historical interest, there are very few modeling related publications. Most of these books were published before 1982. I should advise all what is NOT on the list. NO Windsocks or Datafiles, NO Cross & Cockade and NONE of the most wanted Harleyfords (Fighters, Bombers, Marine, already sold). There are a lot of real gems on the list, including 1918 issues of Flight and the Aeroplane journals. To obtain a copy of this list and make arrangements for purchase write to: Kris Penttinen 71 Lake St. Pleasantville NY 10570 Please note, you will HAVE to contact him the old fashioned way (i.e. pen and paper). Kris has just moved and I don't have a new phone number for him. Note also HE DOESN'T HAVE E-MAIL. Hope you find what you are looking for. I have no vested interest in this sale, I am just a satisfied customer.
