Glen -- I don't keep the box art, but I do keep a certain number to contain the leftover parts -- just anal, I guess, but I find it helps to have boxes that are clearly ship parts, WWI, WWII, etc. Every once in a while I have one box that becomes the tray I use to hold parts for moving to and from the wash sink, current strips of sand paper, etc. Others get used in various ways -- my sister once received a coat for Christmas that was in a box that formerly held a 1/16th scale JagdPanther. -- This has been Mark and/or Mary Shannon at Shingend@ix.netcom.com History manages to get away with cliches no novelist could. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Sep 1997 12:09:32 -0400 From: Geoff Smith To: "INTERNET:wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu" Subject: Re: Leftovers Message-ID: <199709131209_MC2-2044-C2EE@compuserve.com> Tear up the box into small pieces and place in a bowl. Add milk and allow= to soak for 10 - 15 minutes. Heat in the microwave for 1 min. and add sug= ar to taste. This provides a really nourishing meal for next to no outlay th= us allowing more cash to spend on kits which provide more boxes. It's not se= lf sustaining of course and does require the occasional meal in between but McDonalds have been serving something similar (allegedly) in buns for yea= rs so it must be OK. Please don't try this with bagged kits, you get terrible indigestion. (had to borrow wheels from Testor's Spad). Struts are a little thick and rudder will have to be scratched, but it comes with a rudimentary cockpit (which is all it probably had) w/a tach or altimeter & thick control column. It scales out pretty well and the 7-cylinder Gnome is useable. If building a Russian Morane, roundels from the Blue Rider IRAS sheet may be desired. In 1/48 scale, a bargain at five bucks. The Tom's Spandau will be very visible on this one. Thanks Al. In passing, I'd like to mention that Mark Shannon swept the 1/48 biplane category at the Austin annual contest today with a nice Fokker D VIII and two Dr Is.\ Cheers! What a consistent bunch! - I mentioned recently that Eduard have informed 4-plus (the main UK importer) that the Nie 17 is next followed by the Alb. (With no mention of the HD-1) Who do you believe? Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Sep 1997 12:45:35 +0100 (BST) From: Sandy Adam To: wwi group Subject: Leuchars Battle of Britain Airshow Message-ID: My family spent a marvellous day at the BoB Airshow at RAF Leuchars yesterday and as always a great time was had by all. Lots of noisy blowpipe type devices, usual fantastic Red Arrows display, joined this year by La Patrouille de France and the Irish air display team (no jokes please). Highlights were the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and B-17, but unfortunately the Swordfish had to cancel at the last minute. lots of good trade stands, with bargains to be had in SMER kits and DML Fokkers - Hannants were there and doing brisk trade in Udet D.VIIs and Goerth D.VIIIs at 9.99GBP each - may still have some in shops if anybody is interested - I'm afraid I had to make a trek back to the carpark to unload my haul after visiting this area. I had also been contemplating the Chaz Bowyer book on HP bombers at 24.99 and found it at Hannants remaindered at 8.99GBP. Still had two copies when I left. Although no WW1 aircraft, lots of interest and another triumph for Leuchars. Since you are trying to, prove that Voss didn't fly a Pfalz operationally it is impossible to find photographic evidence of him not doing so! Thus you will be unable to prove this negative point. On Fri, 12 Sep 1997, Bill Shatzer wrote: > Dennis Hylands, "Werner Voss". > And, 'tis pretty clear that all four of Voss's August '17 victories > were claimed flying the (an?) Since WW1 pilots often flew several sorties a day and could fly continuously day after day - the "fact" that he may have been flying Alb or Fok does not mean he could not have also flown Pfalz. As for Hylands, for every quote of one author's opinion I am sure we can all find another author stating the opposite. for example: "The mercurial Werner Voss was posted to command Jagstaffel 10 at the end of July 1917 and used one of the first Pfalz D IIIs on which he recorded four victories before taking possession of a Fokker Triplane." Peter L Gray I've not read the Hylands book and I do not know the authors name - but have read several others by Gray (as I am sure you have) and respect his research before putting this statement into print. But I am quite happy that you may disagree and think it unlikely Voss flew a Pfalz - on the other hand you must respect that there is perfectly good reason why I should decide that the verdict is open. If, of course, somebody finds a hitherto unknown Voss diary which states something along the lines of "I never have and never will fly a Pfalz.." then I would be the first to agree with your OPINION. In the absence of this you will not be able to prove your point categorically. Why bother? Sandy ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 675 *********************
