The fabric would have had to be painted with several coats of clear shrinking dope before the streaky green finish was painted on, otherwise the fabric would simply not have shrunk tightly onto the airframe. (and if the green was shrinking dope it'd shrink unevenly) Then the streaky finish is painted onto a water (andp paint) proof surface so will not soak through, though the bands might be visible as alternating dark and light linen colours. I don't *know* this to be the case BUT British a/c had several coats of shrinking cellulose dope before the PC.10 was applied. I'm sure some clever sod could make out a case for a plane built by dutchman Anthony Fokker having House of Orange colouring. Seriously! though, I remember painting the framework of my Dr1 crash in aluminium/steel colours in the belief that these were unpainted - I haven't got access at the moment to any Dr1 refs to check back why I did I this but off the top of my head it seems reasonable. Part of the reason for lozenge fabric was to keep down weight (of paint) and surely nowhere would less need paint than interior framework. Given that by this time, manufacturers must have foreseen a service life for their products of no more than a year - why paint unnecessary bits? There is a wartime (c. 1941/42) book bio published by McMillan on J. G. McGee, but I can't help but think it was published in some form before the book. They arrived the day before UPS left on strike -- about 2weeks and a little bit from the day I ordered. It appears they are having various growing pains, and have their good days and their bad. John has been very courteous and has responded to my E-mails relatively quickly (within a few days). My remark about the color of Navratl's heart marking on the Glencoe decal sheet is based on the work of the late Martin O'Connor. I know one or two others praised this 1/48 resin kit and were instrumental in me ordering it - what a clean, sharp moulding. Superb panel/rib detail, good naval hex lozenge transfers etc. Cracking kit. Only 200 produced though so, if you fancy the subject (Reinhard's top wing shedder) go for it now. CS say they will be doing 1/48 Alb W4, Nie 9/10, SE5, Fok D.V in future. YeeHah! Sandy ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 659 *********************
