Welcome back from Nats, those of you who went. And 'GRATS to those who placed! Hope all had a safe and enjoyable trip. As for the Dornier D.I, Matt pointed out earlier the drawings in WWI AERO #155 (factory 3-view, if memory serves). The D.I has popped up several times in SKYWAYS, the sister publication to WWI AERO. At least one mention is made of the AAC D.I. If interested, I can look up which issue(s). (List inside back covers of WWI AERO.) Is Matt crazy to want to model all six Dornier D.Is? I, for one, think not. The Meikraft kit is better than scratchbuilding. I have an extra Meikraft D.I kit if anyone is interested (or if Matt needs a spare. . . ). Did Meikraft go belly-up? The last I saw from them was a Fokker D.I. They had promised me copies of it (long story), but I never saw one in the styrene, only in the press. Have Fun!! It was (I think) two years between them releasing the SPAD 13 and the SSW D.I. Plus, some of us have waited a lllooonnnggg time for some things from them. Also, never ever send them money direct. Wait until one of the shops get the product in hand. No fine surface detail on the windhoff radiators on my model. Don't know how I missed you previous review (or should we say preview if the kit hasn't been built yet?;-). Could you send it to me (off the list) if you've kept it. And thanks for the rather obvious info about the lack of metal panel lines on the fuselage, which I also missed. Oh well, I did say I'd only had a quick look at the kit. :-( Sin in haste, be embarrassed in leisure, to paraphrase a well known expression. Hi Brad - yes it was reprinted in a limited edition of 200 copies at a price of 225GBP and I believe Naval and Military Press still have a copy or two - BUT this is not the full original set but only the six volumes of text. They may reprint the appendices at some future stage but who knows about the maps? I'll find out this weekend if the Awards books are still available and prices - I don't know if I can justify them or not. I have already bought armfuls of old Datafiles, Specials, Windsock magazines, the Harleyford Bombers book, The German Giants, British Aeroplanes of WW1, Eiserne Kreuz etc etc - and my wife is muttering about Quarry tiles for the house and resurfacing the driveway! If they are still going a-begging I shall let interested parties know. The "stiching" Bill is talking about iz an eyletted access strip that runs from just aft of the seat to the kingpost of the tailskid. THis is not to be confused with the seams that make up the component pieces of the fuselage covering. This area could be unlaced in the field for internal repairs. FYI... Although not well documented there is a hinged panel just to the read of the firewall for access to the intake manifold and carb. You can also reach the fuel and oil tanks from this area. Fokker practice, since the days of the Eindecker was to sew all the fuselage covering together as a "sock" and slip it on the fuse, then lace shut the access panel and taughten the fabric with the shrinking coats of dope. This is then over coated with either more dope coats ( clear or colored) and generally a topcoat of linseed oil varnish. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jul 1997 07:55:27 +1000 From: Shane Weier To: "'wwi@pease1.sr.unh.edu'" Subject: RE: Avro 504K Night Fighter Message-ID: > >I wrote: >> >> (who can give you a long and scholarly article on the whys, wherefores >> and uses of NIVO if you're interested in such detail) >> > Rory comments: >>I seem to remember an reading an article about NIVO in Windsock or >C&C... The K&B Gotha most resembles a G.V, and the box art shows one, only with an LVG-built G.IV finish. Most of the G.Vs were finished in hand-painted irregular polygons/lozenges, and a company called Americal prints decals of this pattern in 1/48, but I think you may need more than two sheets (as well as an insignia/marking sheet). This could be costly. There is one color profile in the Datafile Special (excellent reference, still in print, but rather pricey @ $30+ for a 60 pg softcover) which shows a G.V with a very pale blue fuselage and printed lozenge fabric covered wings, and a photograph of another sporting very large (paintable with stencils) hexagons... You may have to take some license with this one to avoid cost overruns. I can supply copies of any references you need.
