Four or five (or six?) of us have responded Mac; only one (or two, obliquely) admit to using Wintel boxes. This is about the opposite of what the market share is *supposed* to be. Maybe this shouldn't surprise us. In art circles, it's typically over 95% Mac, and what we do is close to, if not the same as, art. In Atlanta last weekend, I visited a CompUSA store. One whole *room* was devoted to Mac. And there were several aisles of dual-platform titles. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 11:27:45 -0500 From: mbittner@juno.com To: wwi Subject: Re: Scale Wars and CPU Wars Message-ID: <19970628.114829.16270.1.mbittner@juno.com> On Sat, 28 Jun 1997 11:42:49 -0400 JimAlley@aol.com writes: > This is still interesting. Well, I wasn't going to reply, because in the scheme of things, it just doesn't matter. However, after this post I just had to. I'm a "Wintel" user, primarily because I program the boxes. One thing I've noticed in big business: the overwhelming majority use "Wintel". Again, not that it matters. I've recently gone from a five year old Mac LCII to a 200mhz Pentium. It's blazing fast and software is available in every discount and drugstore (an unbelievable number of high-quality flight sims with more coming out every month! ). But even with Windows 95, the thing is overly complicated compared to the Mac. Simple tasks require a plunge into an abyss. Many times a file is simply lost somewhere on the hard drive and all attempts to find it are thwarted. If only the Wintel freaks could just TRY a Mac for a couple of weeks, I swear they would never go back to their PC-clone. And that damned DOS...like driving a '97 car with a starter crank! Why is this thing still running? In 1997? Yet Bill Gates is laughing all the way to the bank. Dave Barry is right in his latest book: computer nerds feel more macho with the complicated Wintel boxes. Yet the astounding thing for me is the vast number of flight sims. Mac people think they are lucky to have Hornet and Hellcats and Apache and Hind. For Wintel, this is only the beginning: Flying Corps, A-10 Silent Thunder (with flowing waterfalls!) Longbow, Advanced Tactical Fighters, USNF 97 (with functioning rearview mirrors!) and on and on. The graphics are stunning to someone who has had Hornet and Red Baron on the Mac for several years. Full texture mapping, flowing waterfalls, rearview mirrors, etc. Unbelievable stuff coming out: F-15E Strike Eagle from two dfferent publishers, RB II, FN 2, several F-22s, Mig Alley and Sabre Ace (and Phantom Ace next year). Amazing... All this talk about computers. . . . I got a great deal on my Wintel--a state of the art system, admittedly lost on this neophyte. Yes, I know my setup will look prehistoric within a year, but that's okay. Win95 can be a hassle, yes, but there are good and bad about everything. I enjoy reading your aeroplane related posts regard- less of what you use to enter them. You kids can go on with the CPU skirmish if you like. . . Have Fun!! The article in Aeroplane Monthly gives a short biography on von Schleich, but do someone know of references for further information on Germanys Black Knight? Having done some research on the Luftwaffe in Norway during WW2, I was not aware that one of the famous WW1 aces was based here until I read this article. I am sure everyone is aware of Goering rising to head of Luftwaffe and the list has discussed Christensen going back to Flandern, but were there other aces who gained high positions during WW2? Let's see, here's a few that I found in "Eagles of the Black Cross" by W.A. Musciano: Robert Ritter von Greim: Goering's successor as head of Luftwaffe during last days of WWII. He committed suicide after being captured at end of war. Bruno Loerzer: Commanded Luftwaffe in Sicily and Goering's Chief of Staff. Josef Veltjens: Early leader of the Storm Troopers. Performed diplomatic missions during the war and was sent to obtain permission from Finland to fly supplies accross their land. Oskar von Boenigk: General in Luftwaffe who retired in 1940. Died as a POW in Russian hands. Ernst Udet: Director of technical dept. in German Air Ministry. Flew all design purchased by Luftwaffe. Suicide in1941. Theo Osterkamp: In charge of a large section of the Channel coast where the main German fighter force operated. Josef Jacobs: Major in Luftwaffe There are probably a bunch more, but not bad as a starting point. (As an aside, he also happens to have several pieces of von Schlieh memorabilia, including his Blue Max--which he has kindly allowed me to wear!) If all goes according to plan, this will be a very good issue, with a lot of information on Bavarian units and some surprises. The Here is what I hope to do: Get a Big PowerPC Mac and the software that will let it run Win95 apps. If the Win95 game code was properly written (small chance) the Win95 flight simulators should run just fine in emulation mode on the Mac. This way you can use your Mac for real work and the Win95 emulator for games on the same machine! ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 594 *********************
