In just the past couple of years, a Swordfish has been restored and flies in many Canadian Airshows. The Hamilton-Wentworth/Canadian Warplane Heritage Airshow over Fathers Day weekend will probally have this year. The airshow is held at the Hamilton Airport at Mount Hope. Jose" To: wwi Subject: Baumer's Pfalz D.VIII Message-ID: Hi all, I just saw a shot of Baumer's Pfalz D.VIII and want to clarify something regarding the markings. The plane's got dark-light-dark stripes mid fuselage which I will interpred as red-wht-blk as on his Dr.I What I'd like to know is how the cowl and tail could have been done. These parts of the plane are painted, I think in Jasta Boelke regalia. The forward half of the cowl is light and the rear half is dark. I only have a shot of the port side of the tail which is light from the leading edge of the horizontal tail surfaces, all the way back, including the vertical tail and fuselage. My questions are: 1. Is it safe to surmise that the cowl is in white and black? Jasta Boelke's Dr.I's had white centers to their black cowls. 2. The tail, is the port side black. Also, as I recall, a feature of Jasta Boelke's Dr.I's were their half white, half black tails. comments anyone? ********************************************************************* Joey Valenciano WW1 modeller, teacher, jazz musician, joeyval@pusit.admu.edu.ph sitarist tel. Hi Tom, are you the chap who lives in Frederikstad? - I have a dentist friend who practices there (Did his degree in Scotland). I visited him a few years ago and got shown round by boat - we saw some of the Royal Family at one point. Nice place - but maybe lacking a little in model shops! I use Mail Order in UK extensively and recommend the following: Hannants in Lowestoft- extensive but UK p&p is high, I believe Europe is at cost though. Maintrack in Hastings - friendly, helpful and fast but smaller stock ID Models in Luton - only source for Atlee & Roseparts, but much slower although everything has always arrived eventually. Aeroclub - excellent service and they do stuff like Sierra, Tom's, Kosters, Blue Max, Blue Rider and lots of tools. Pegasus - buy Blue Max direct and I think they post free. Best sources for you are probably Hannants and Aeroclub - Hannants catalogue is huge and worth every penny, Aeroclub smaller but lots of WW1. Suggest you send for them. Hannants on (UK) 01502-517444, fax 01502 500521 Aeroclub - 0115-9670044, fax 0115-9671633. Fair day but windy with clouds here and there at 2200. Went out after drachens with Lufberry and Willis at 10 o'clock carrying indindary bullets myself. Lufberry was forced to return as his gun wouldn't work so Willis and I kept on for another half hour until my motor began to miss on account of a bad spark plug. Came back and we just missed a Boche machine which had been over Ham. I've had poor luck with getting near Boches. Wrote to Helen and to Mrs Harper. Helen must be back now in Paris. I'd like very much to see her indeed. Motion pictures were taken this afternoon of all of us with "Old Glory" and of the Capt, Thaw and Lufberry leaving at 5 o'clock on Patrol with their Spads. Went out on Patrol along our lines with Haviland and Rockwell at 6:30. Rockwell had to return on account of a jammed machine gun so I stayed around over our drachens until sunset to get any Boches who might try to bring one down. One was brought down by a Boche out here about 7 o'clock last evening when no one was there to go after him. Found out incidentally this p.m. that a German biplace was forced to land in our lines at the same time when MacConnell and I had our fight on March 19th and about the same place where poor Mac fell, only within our lines. The two aviators were made prisoners by the Colonel of the 98th Regiment of Infantry. It might very well have been the one I attacked as I thought I saw flames on its fuselage but didn't see it descend. At any rate I've told the facts to the Captain and have made a demand to Com'dt Facon thru him asking him to try to confirm it for me thru the Colonel of the 98th. It mill mean the military medal and a citation for me if it is confirmed as being mine. My citation for my wound has been accorded but has not yet arrived here. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Genet, N-124 ***************************************** Saturday, April 14, 1917 Left the field at 10 o'clock with indendiary bullets for my machine gun to attack enemy drachens. Lufberry and Willis accompanied me. Clouds were at 2000 metres like yesterday so we went over them. Lufberry led but found his machine gun was jammed so had to return. Willis and I went back to the field with him but started out for the lines at once after reaching our field, we went to 4000 meters. My motor was missing on account of a bad spark plug so after half an hour over the lines without seeing any Boches I headed back and Willis followed. Just before we got to Ham a Boche Machine was there but Willis saw it much too high to go after. The French batteries were firing at it. We landed and Willis turned over on the field and completely smashed his machine Time: 1 hour Height max 4000 meters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Saturday, 14 April, 1917 Went out on patrol at 6:30 this afternoon with Haviland and Rockwell. The >>Windsock BrisFit Special, *part one* is due at any time. Look >>for it. > Its not due any more ! Mine is now sitting open on the right hand side of my keyboard. Ands it answers some of my questions while squibbing others. Heres a review based on just 30 minutes familiarization. The volume is about the same in size as the SE-5a and other specials, 48 pages plus covers. It has a selection of plans in both 1:72 and 1:48 drawn by Ian Stair, and showing both F.2A and F.2B aircraft, and power plant variations (Hispano Suiza and R-R Falcon) Two pages of colour profiles, two of colour detail photographs of the RAF museums Biff and over 100 B&W photographs. Entertainingly, the back cover shows the "up the nose" photo of the Biff I'd been looking for (No, theres no gap, the circumferential radiator on that machine at least occludes the whole area) and a shot of 1AFC's Cpl Jensen at his dual-yoked Lewises gives a reasonable (though imperfect) idea of how it looks. BUT DAMMIT..... I want to finish my Biff before old age overtakes me and Rimmel has noted that volume 2 will contain "cockpit layouts and armamnet diagrams, structural airframe drawings, Mk.IV plans more colour profiles, detailed study of US machines (I don't care, you may), and *more* detail colour close ups. I don't know whether I should laugh or cry Shane >PS. Lamas, M.D." To: wwi Subject: Hantelmann's Fokker D.VII Message-ID: <199704150526.WAA12929@olympus.net> In order to get back into practice after my 30 year modeling hiatus, I found a local hobby shop where I bought three cheap WW I models to practice basic techniques on before advancing to better kits. Two are Testors which will be built and then handed over to my 7 year old. The other is a Monogram Fokker D.VII. Since this is an old Aurora mold from my past, I planned to do a decent job on it and keep it. The kit came with no authentic color scheme instructions. However, the decals included a "Death's Head" (Skull & Bones) personal insignia of Georg Hantelmann of Jasta 15. This machine (Fok. D.VII 2469/18) was borrowed by Kurt Wusthoff when he was shot down and the machine was captured (G/5/17). A photograph of it is in "Jasta Pilots" page 156. The Jasta 15 color scheme (as in Berthold's machine in "Button #2) was "Prussian blue fusalages, red nose and white fins". The B&W photograph shows this pattern. However, I can not determine from this photograph if Hantelmann's machine had painted blue wings like Berthold's machine or if the wings were still in lozenge. Can anybody tell me: 1.) What were the upper surface wing colors? 2.) What mix of Testors enamels would give a "Prussian" blue? 3.) What were the under surface colors?
