Fair day but cloudy, bid good-bye to Major and Mrs Parker early this morning and went up to the Gare du Nord to take the 9:35 train but found out there that the first train was at 1:15 so came back to the office of the Chicago Daily News and saw Paul there. Met an Amer. Legion fellow by the name of Barrett who came there to see Paul. Lovell came along late in the morning and we left Paul to go for the train about noon. Had our luncheon near the Gare du Nord. Train was late in arriving at St Just getting there at 4:15. Went to a little store there where we always gather for Tea and drinks and waited there until about 6 o'clock when we walked out to camp. Our Escadrille is the only one of the Group still back here. We shall certainly move up near Ham in two or three days. The French make a heavy attack south of St Quentin today and the English have been attacking from the west. (An) American armed ship has been sunk in the English Channel by a German Submarine and 28 men are thought lost. Found letters from Betty Wright, Mrs Barlow telling about Gertrude, Miriam Griffin, Mr Grundy and Paul (one which he wrote before he came up on Sunday). Took the bandage off my wound this morning and it has completely healed over but there is quite a scar which will last a long time I think. I think from the miserable way in which Gertrude has trteated me it will be best to drop off all communication with her even tho I may hear from her some time in the future. I can't stand such treatment. Major Parker thinks he will take up my Navy case at once with Major Logan and perhaps the Ambassador and also the French War Dept. to get it to officially request the U.S. Government to reinstate me honorably in its service on the grounds of my good service here. The major advises me to return to the States in the event of war. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Only one photo of a Japanese one and one half strutter in the datafile book and no indication that it was used in Siberia during the 1918-19 "intervention" In any case, the photographed aircraft is pretty "plain Jane" - over-all light colored (natural fabric?) with a dark (black?) metal panel around and between the cockpits. A fuselage hinomaru about in the location the British roundel was carried and a 6"-8" arabic numeral "1" on the rudder with three very much smaller kana characters (too small to decipher) immediately above the "1". The aircraft carries the mounting for the machine gun, but no machine gun, in the rear cockpit.
