I agree with tom on the baby Blue Max and think this will serve both purposes, as first, it would really look nice, it would let us recognise one another and certainlly other modelers would start asking, hey you look too young to be The Red Baron, where you could explain all about the list, which is nicer that having people staring at your lapel trying to read out our web page. Idea to complement this one : we could have some cards made, designed by someone on the list , including the web page address as well as one's own e-mail , and we could each make them and use them. About the 100 pins, I am sure the list would buy them. Well, the only ideas have been Rob's, John's and Al's. John is the *only one* that has come up with a complete idea - and he's willing to pay for it. All of these other ideas have been great; however, they lack one important item: follow through. It's not enough to say "let's use image x", or "let's do y" while nobody (besides John) has come through with a complete plan. I just brought the idea up, and am willing to be a focal point. I knew right off the bat that I did not have the time (nor money) to come up with a complete plan. My apologies for that. I finally got it done. My Sopwith Pup is finished. Just for the fun of it I've kept a log on the assembly of this kit and as I as reading it I came to the conclusion that I've had 32 work sessions spanning from Jan, 24 till March, 24, totalling something in between 20 to 25 hours. I've used a lot of first time techniques on this kit, some of them gathered from the list, and I'll try to list below the main steps I took when building the kit. - sanded off all the fabric impressions on the kit parts - filed in the trenches on the wings - scratchbuilt the cockpit details : new seat, new instrument panel, fuel pump, footboards, stick, ruder bar and a couple of other little bits - cut the fuselage in order to insert an exhaust channel - separated the control surfaces (I didn't really separated them, just scored deep into the lines until they could be made to bend up or down. This is one part I'm not happy with the results, and I believe that actually fully separating the control surfaces would be better. Will try it on my next project.) - glued a thin plastic card panel scored from the inside with a fine tip ball-point on the fuselage aft of the cockpit, in order to simulate the ribs I sanded off while getting rid of the fabric impression. - added two breather tubes made from telephone wire insulation. - used SNJ metallic paint for the first time on the cowling and metal panels (this stuff is simply great) - painted the kit using "Clear doped fabric" and "PC 10" paints from a company that is no longer: "Precision Paints". Those tinlets must be more than 10 years old. I bought them once in a sale from Hannants in the UK. The colours looked quite right to me and I was pleased with the results even though they took a while to dry. - tried to use wood struts cut from wooden matches but found out that once cut they would be too flexible to be of use. Ended up using the kit's struts, after separating them from the part that holds each pair together. - made very small depressions on the wings to accept the struts and glued one at the time. After having the 4 interplane struts glued and fully dried, I glued the top wing on, the cabane struts being applied later. - painted the struts - applied 2 coats of future with a brush - applied the decals (I used the kit's decals and I'm not happy at all with the result. The roundels were off-centered even though the red dots were left separated to be applied over the main roundels and the registration numbers were also badly printed.) I used the decals and future technique and it worked perfectly. - sprayed the entire model with a mix of flat and semi-flat 1/1 humbrol cotes. - rigged the aircraft with .14 mm nylon monofilament. I had pre-drilled locating holes with an insulin syringe for the rigging and it was just a matter of anchoring the monofilament with CA gel in one of the holes and then pulling the nylon trough the other hole until tight and fixing it with another touch of CA gel. Although quite practical I'm not very happy with the results since afterwards I had to try to dissimulate the holes on the wing , filling them with tiny amounts of wood glue and retouching the paint. From a distanc it looks ok but if you look real close you'll se that the wing was perforated. The problem is not so evident on the other parts where I used the rigging since in the first place the control cables would naturally come out of the fuselage the same way this method works. Anyway, guess, I'll try a different technique next time. And that's about it. I did have a lot of fun as well as some exasperating moments but in the end I'm pleased with the results and I'm looking forward to my next WW1 kit which will be the Roland from Airfix too. Any comments, suggestions on this one. I would also like to thank all of you on the list who cared to answer to my constant queries and specially Mr. 1/72nd Bittner who was great help as usual. Hope this can lead other lurkers on the list to experiment and try a WW1 kit for the first time just as it has happened to me. Thanks again for all pedro P.S. I even found something that was much easier to do than in the normal closed cockpit types: I've never had better painted canopy frames in my all life ;-). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 08:33:03 -0500 From: barrett@iplink.net (barrett) To: wwi Subject: Re: The Pup is flying Message-ID: Pedro informed us: > >I did it. French time was set forward one hour at midnight last night to conform with the standard summer time. Beautiful day, quite warm and less wind than there has been these past days. Got up early and made a flight along the lines around St Quentin and east of Ham with Parsons and Willis. Lufberry went out with us but had to return at once on account of his machine gun not working. We saw several Boche machines at intervals and I chased one which had Cocardes--the same design as the French and English identification mark on the wings--but with a black ring on the outside. Couldn't catch up with it. The Boches are even carrying cocardes now with the outside circle red like the French but a black center in place of a blue one so there is going to be heaps of trouble in chasing after the right machines and looking out for those which look friendly but aren't. We were out from 6:20 to 8:20. Flying was a delight to-day. We went to a 1000 metres--the first time it has been practical to do so for some time on account of the past poor weather. We are to move over to an old German aviation field south of Ham in a few days and will be quartered in an old picturesque Chateau there. That will be better than here altho we'll be in plenty of danger from bombardment by hostile avions etc. We are much too far from the lines here now. It takes too much time and waste of gasoline to fly out and back to them. Took a long walk this afternoon with Willis to get some much needed exercise. The weather felt very springlike to-day. We found some buds on some bushes. All America is mighty well riled up now and is clamoring for war. It will come soon, I think, now. Wrote to Paul Rockwell this evening telling all the final news about the finding of poor Mac etc. There ought to be mail for us from the States to-morrow or the following day as the French ship, the Rochambeau, arrived from N.Y. in Bordeaux the day before yesterday. Wish there would be a letter from dear Gertrude with whatever others come. I don't suppose there will be tho. Why should there be after all these months with no word from her? Its mighty discouraging. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Genet ********************************** Sunday, March 25, 1917 Made an early flight along the lines around Ham and St. Quentin with Parsons and Willis this morning. I led, we got off at 6:20 and returned two hours later. The atmosphere was very clear and not too cold and the wind was less strong than it has been for several days of late. We sighted several hostile machines at different times and I chased one into its lines north of St Quentin. It had the same identification mark as the English and French--circles instead of crosses and the outside circle was black which made it look like the English mark which is blue in the outside circle. Reports are out also that several Boche machines have been seen with circles the outside of which is red like ours and the small inner circle black instead of blue. That is going to cause a lot of very risky and dangerous mistakes indeed. Why can't the blamed Boches act humanely? Lufberry started out with us but was forced to return immediately as his machine gun wouldn't work. Time: 2 hours Height max. 3700 meters from the Flight Log of E.C.C. I enjoyed following your progress; it was both interesting and informative. I recently bought some Airfix kits, so I will put your experience to use, but I have a couple questions. 1) Why were you dissatisfied with the scoring/bending of the control surfaces? 2) Regarding the strut canals or trenches on the top wing, would it be easier to go ahead and glue to strut in as intended, filling up the canal, then just fill in the cracks around the canal with putty? 3) Finally, I would also be interested in what you find out about the Roland - the paint scheme on the box top doesn't look very interesting but I have no sources of other options...
