Well, there are a couple that are now considered "not necessary" with the release of some of the newer kits. However, the biggest problem that I have found with the ESCI kits is when they cloned the Revell ones, they decided to shrink the upper wing. I have no idea why, but that seems to have happend at least on the D.III and the Nie.17. The D.VII is still a good kit; and the Camel is almost an exact duplicate of the Revell. The ones that are now "out of date" because of new releases are the D.III (new Pegasus) and the SPAD (Meikraft). Sure wish other companies would come out with new molds for the others. As far as the Goshawk goes, Squadron/Signal In Action #1156 deals with the Navy Hawks. The kit is a nice one, albeit a bit spartan. However, that's a topic to move off list. ;-) Again, welcome to the list. You'll find a great group of people here, including some of the well known WW1 historians. Tom: I pitched the ESCI decals for my D VII because Berthold's "winged sword" that came on the sheet is very inaccurate. There are two places that I know of where you can find photos of this device: 1) Above the Lines by Franks et.al., and 2) the Fokker Dr1/D VII special softcover - text translated from Nowarra (I forget the publisher - I saw it in a book store and flipped through it. It looks like a Squadron "In Action" book, but it isn't.) I didn't use the crosses because I had a sheet of Pegasus with the right stuff - used it instead. I've used the ESCI decals from the Ni.17, and they were absolutely fine. No problems after many years. My preference is for no URLs on the design. I think of the pin as more of an attention getting device to perhaps elicit interest from fellow WWI modelers vice an advertisement for the list or any individual web site. I liked the Camel on the web page and the idea of a small Blue Max. On my last business trip, the airline's magazine had an advertisement for Pinsource, a company specializing in pins. They have a web site at www. Pinsource.com. I suggest if we do get a pin, we order at least 100. I'll buy at least two. But I would like a button as well. Glen Now, to shift gears! I attended the IPMS Will/Cook meeting Friday as a guest speaker. I did my speil on modern armor with a twist. I added several slides of captured British tanks from Cambrai. I got these from Greg VanWyngarden, one appears to have a caricature of "Fritz" on the side. It was also "swap night" and I picked up a number of Windsock specials and Datafiles for really reasonable prices. The Will/Cook contest/swap is April 5, I am planning on attending, hopefully with a HP 0/400 in tow. Anyone else gonna be there? Not that I'll be there for sure (especially since I already got the kitchen pass for the Regionals and the Nationals) but just in case, I would like to know where it's at. Oh if that dream will only come true. Cold, windy and misty. News came in this morning that a body of French Cavalry found yesterday at Bois L'Abbe S.E. of Flavy Le Martel a badly smashed Nieuport with the body of MacConnell, dead about 3 days inside with no papers on him and a number of bullet wounds. The Germans evidently only searched his body for papers and then left him unburied. Bois L'Abbe was just back of the German lines up there the 20th. Went out on a reconnaisance patrol with the Captain, Hoskier, Parsons, Hinkle and Bigelow at 10:30. Went along the lines south and southeast of St.Quentin. Saw no Boche machines and little activity on the lines. Very windy and cold in the air. Left patrol when the rest headed back and went over to Vois L'Abbe to find Mac's machine. Went very low and finally found the machine completely wrecked in a tiny orchard just on the southern edge of a town just west of Bois L'Abbe Detroit-Blue, by name. Circled over it and saw lots of French soldiers gathered around it. Mac certainly must have been killed in the air for he never would have attempted to make a landing in that small field. Walked down to St Just late in afternoon for some exercise. Another American vessel sunk without warning by a German U-boat and 19 American lives lost. Teddy Roosevelt is trying to raise 100,000 volunteers to fight on European soil in case the States declare war and wants all Americans now serving France to be with him to help train the troops. Wish Teddy =would= come over here. Letter from Mr Grundy demanding definite news about Mac so I have written him a full account of the affair. It was reported in NY papers three days ago that Mac had either been killed or was missing after a flight over the lines. Captain went over to see about Mac's body to-day and found he had been terribly mangled with the wreckage, his papers, boots, cap and flying suit taken by the Boches and his body left unburied beside his machine. He will be buried to-morrow in a coffin and placed in a grave beside the road where he fell. Village there is Petit Detroit instead of Detroit Blue. I made a mistake in the name on the map this morning. All honor to gallant Mac. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Genet ****************************************** Saturday, March 24, 1917 Went out at 10:30 this morning with Parsons, Hinkle, Bigelow and Hoskier and Capt Thenault in Spads for a group flight over the German lines around La Fere and St Quentin. Kept well in group and saw no Boche machines or much artillery action on the lines. Report came in last night from French cavalry that they had found MacConnells wrecked machine with his body at Bois l-Abbe, south of Flavey-Le-Martel which on Monday was still within the German lines. The Germans had taken all his papers but hadn't buried him or burned the remains of the machine. When the patrol started back this morning I left them and went over to Bois l'Abbe just at the southern edge of a little village named Detroit Blew. I didn't try to land as there were no good fields nearby but circled around overhead for a few minutes. The machine was completely smashed and in a small apple orchard. Mac evidently was killed in the air during the combat and merely tumbled into this particular place. He would never have tried to land there voluntarily. Quite a number of French soldiers were gathered around the wreck and stared up at me as I circled around over them. The captain landed over that way today to go over to see the wreck and attend to the disposition of Mac's body. Time: 1 hour 45 minutes Height Max. 2200 meters from the Flight Log of E.C.C. Is it to allow EXISTING list members to recognise one another at contests? Is it to attract attention and get non-subscribers to inquire about the list? Or both? (2) Do we see the pin/label a cheap, disposable, single-use item (i.e. "Hi! My name is _________") or something more permanent, up to an enamelled baby Blue Max? I kinda like the baby Blue Max idea too, Ken, but the $ outlay would be significantly greater. I have had this type of pin made for the local model club by KB Specialties of California. I think 100 is the minimum order, BTW. They looked great! In any case, whatever the list decides is OK with me. I just want SOMETHING in time for the Plano contest! Even the other categories looked good. I plan to be there next October as an entrant, possibly with a JN4 or Fokker DVII (I have to hold up the Lincoln part of LOCon). I would also like to encourage other list members to come. These "smaller" contests give great opportunities to hold discussion groups, as well as meeting everyone face-to-face. Of course, anyone wishing to bring WW1 kits/accessories to sell as a vendor would probably get some of my money. That's a suburb of Chicago - about 25 miles southwest of the Loop. Don't have the exact address here at work with me, but I'll post it this PM. It's a local Jr High School in Homewood.
