The March 1997 issue of the _Journal of Military Ordnance_ has an article on 'Mother'. Why wasn't this around when I was doing my conversion? Gads... Looks like you REALLY need a button to drum up > more Japaneese members! What! I thought a few Japanese subscribed in this list with no posts, only reading. I know somebody who interested in WW1 and on-line. I think that they have a horror of English and too shy to mistake, as like me :-) Thanks again, Hiro. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Mar 1997 23:57:06 -0800 From: "Marian Hollinger, Bradley Omanson" To: wwi Subject: Friday, 16 March 1917, Raoenel Message-ID: <332CF952.1E0F@host.dmsc.net> 956. China has severed diplomatic relations with Germany and seized German ships in her ports. Very foggy in morning so was unable to get out on service as we were supposed to do. Big attack is in preparation along this part of the front and troops and supply wagons are passing eastward towards the lines by every route day after day now. Order given by Com'dt Facant this morning for one pilot of each patrol going out to attack and destroy an enemy drachen with incendiary bullets while the other three pilots with him acted as a protection against hostile avions. Volunteered to Capt Thenault at once to be the one in my patrol to attack and he granted me that job. It will not be easy as the German drachens are low, well protedted by guns and avions, and are very hard to see on account of their excellent disguise. They are well worth trying for, tho, and I feel willing. Letters from the States at last. One from dear little Mother and one from Kate Mackie. Also have a letter from an old 3rd de Marche of the Legion comrade, an Italian, Albert Mutozze, who left to join his own country's forces when Italy joined the Allies in May 1915. Mighty glad to hear from him. He's a corporal now in the 24th Reg of Italian Infantry. Went out at 1 this afternoon in company with Soubiran, MacConnell, Lovell and Willis as my guard, to attack drachens inside the German lines east of Roye. Had very low mist and had hard time to see but found no drachens and saw no enemy machines. Went as far as Noyon and Guiscard and was called down by the rest with me for doing it but Captain Thenault said I did right so I should worry about the opinion of others. I did what I consider was my duty. English pilot, Lt. Sheridan landed on our field this afternoon because of being lost and we took care of him and have him here for the night. Find him to be a very pleasant chap. Attack by 1st and 3rd armies on this front last night and today has resulted in an advance around Ribecourt and Lassigny of about 4 kilometers. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Genet ****************************************** Friday, March 16, 1917 Went out at 1 p.m. in company with Soubiran, MacConnell, Lovell and Willis as a guard and escort to find and bring down German Drachens along our sector to the east of Roye. Heavy mist and clouds were at 1000 meters. Kept at 1500 meters over the enemy territory watching out for Drachens but couldn't find one in the air anywhere. Soubiran kept above and near me and the other three stayed much higher and more to the rear. Went as far into the enemy lines as Noyon and Guiscard and saw many towns between Roye and these places being burned by the Germans who must be evacuating to their 4th line of defense along Ham, Noyon and St Quentin. Were fired upon by few shells and many incendiary bullets from machine guns on the ground. Saw no hostile avions. Back at 2:55 Time: 1 hour 45 minutes Height 1500 meters from the Flight Log of E.C.C. Hiro, Your English is a LOT better than my Japanese, domo arigato. In fact, your English is better than many of us for whom it is our first language.
