Plus, with the list being a bit slow, I thought I would do so today. The usual "earlier than WW1" stuff abounds in this issue, as well as the "over looked" people of the early aviation period. There are pictures of the Gotha G.VI (the assymmetric one), mostly of the crashed a/c. For those people interested in the Liberty V12, there are some really great photo's and diagrams. Cockpits and Instruments include a good photo of the Albatros B.I (Ph) 24.40, as well as a couple more photo's of the Fokker E.III cockpit. There are some original drawings of the Zeppelin-Lindau (Dornier) D.I (the one kitted by Meikraft). All in all, though, a pretty slow issue. The next issue will be one that the fans of the Fokker E.III will not want to miss. Dan San Abbott is providing a detailed article into the type, and these as supplied by him are a great study. Even though this issue is "slow" in the WW1 department, it's still a worthy buy, and another that members of the list should subscribe to. The Winter 1996 issue of OtF has a small article on the first sqadron of the French Naval Aviation, and there are some great photo's there. However, I want more, in hopes of enhancing some research. I am going to wait for the French tome, and hope that it includes something on this plane in that. It appears to me to be a Nieuport IV two-seater with floats. However, there also appears to be subtle differences. TIA! Excellent photos of an earlier but basically similar version of the aircraft have appeared in a book about the 1913 races, *Deauville 1913, Capitale de l'Hydraviation* Le Bourget: Editions de l'Albaron (Musee de l'Air), 1993. I have recently built a 1/72 model (scratchbuilt of course) for my collection. The floats are most peculiar and include "winglets". I hope this is useful. I have only been lurking so far but hope to be more active in the future. F.Portier, 10 rue du Peintre Lebrun, 78000 Versailles, France. According to Dan Abbot, Fokker-built examples never used colored rib tapes; these would have been cut from lozenged fabric. Albatros- and OAW-built examples could also have used these, I think, as well as the pink or blue ones; check pictures of your subject if possible. BTW, whose aircraft are you buiding? You'd be absolutely right. I have never seen any other method used on a D.VII, which mightn't mean *every* one is chordwise, but sure makes it correct until evidence is produced to disprove it. The first strip on the top wing is centred, smack dab in the middle, the rest added outboard of it. The joins in the fabric are not (and must not be) on the rib stations. The strips on the lower wings start at the root rib and work outwards. >>Also, are rib-tapes applied to underwing surfaces? The decal sheet I bought >>comes with blue and pink rib tapes. According to Dan San Abbott they weren't supposed to be applied there, but we discovered a few exceptions in an earlier discussion. I wouldn't guess what type of tape I'm afraid. Could be either, or both. If you have a photo of the original aircraft and they appear white, or very pale they are *probably* blue. Otherwise, its just guesswork I'm afraid. >>TIA, again! If the joint is load bearing or where it's prone to being knocked, I use CyA. Where parts are tiny, protected, or unlikely to be touched, or where I want a bit more time to ease it into position, I use white glue (PVA woodworking glue, "Elmers" I think, in the States) Sometimes it's necessary to use 2 part epoxies, where strength is necessary, but the fumes from CyA can ruin your work. You're right, the supplied personal marking is wrong, but that ain't the only problem. This machine was an early Fokker-built example and thus should have simpler--ie, less extensive and much less louvered--engine panels as well as a different exhaust; also, the undercarriage wing should not be lozenge covered as it was plywood and painted in Fokker green (of course, none of this matters much if you're like me and are building it essentially for practice). BTW, you might be interested to know that the only known photo of this D.VII shows it with the section of the fuselage around the cokpit between the blue rear and the red engine panels still in the factory-finish streaky Fokker olive green that was characteristic of these early examples. We can assume that this area was later overpainted in red, but this intermediate stage would make for an interesting-looking model. Good luck, and HTH.
