(Whats the saying "Idle hands = >or some such.") AMEN! When I was a rather small tot, my Dad got me some stick and tissue model kit that we built together, flew before the glue was dry and destroyed within minutes. What a blast! When I got a bit older, I graduated to "real" models. You know, plastic things with multiple wings. I can recall how ecstatic I was to see that there were more WWI models than just Revell's. I had just found an Airfix Fokker DR.I. If only I didn't know now what I didn't know then! Fortunately, my parents cared enough to take an interest in my hobby and encourage it. How many non-modeler parents are willing to take a 13-year old kid half-way across the country for an IPMS national contest? They did it several times in succeeding years! When I think about the trouble I could have gotten in... Unfortunately like most kids at that age, I was too smart, and not smart enough all at the same time! If it wasn't for my parents' encouragement of my passion for aviation and modeling I'm not so sure that I'd be here right now! I have come to think about this lately as I sit with my daughter, almost 3 years old, on the floor of the model room while showing her my model kits. This Christmas, I got her a snap-kit (SR-71, fewest parts I could find!) and "we" put it together. She didn't do much of it as her fingers aren't very strong, but she still beams when she points out "her" airplane. What a way to combine the things we love the most, huh? Sappy comments complete... On service this afternoon but the very low clouds prevented us from going out. Wrote up some notes on Aviation for Major Parker. Received a letter from Dr Gros in reply to mine of last Sunday. He changed the article which came out about us in the Paris Herald after receiving my letter. He writes that he likes my attitude towards France but thinks that I possess no true patriotism for my own country. It was really not his fault after all that the article came out. The blamed reporter made it up out of his head from a few things of no consequence which Dr Gros said. Have written a response to the doctor trying to correct his poor judgement of my Patriotism. I can't help but like Dr Gros immensely. He is mighty sincere in his efforts for the Escadrille. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Poor day. Low clouds prevented flying all day. Wrote up more aviation notes for the Major and some more of my war diary. Am trying to do some of the latter each day now. I must finish it up to date before too many weeks slip by or it may never be completed to date. We're going to have very active service before very long or I'm a mighty poor guesser. I'm hugely enjoying the piano we have here and play on it mighty often as does Steve Bigelow also. The Captain, =trying= to play every day, nearly drives us wild. Don't know why he is over here. Wrote to Moscoe Gibson expressing sympathy to him and Winton for his wife's sudden death. Wonder why I don't hear from beloved Gertrude any more? Where is she? Why doesn't she write? Does she still care anything about me anymore? Perhaps she's engaged to some lucky fellow of Yale of Harvard now and has forgotten or tried to forget all about me.
