Message-ID: Well, I think the previous correspondents who said that we are all the best influences on our children got it right. I have two boys (and a girl) and Christopher (9) has just finished painting a Monogram Mosquito on the kitchen table while the telly played 633 Squadron for the 400th time! He has a large collection of videos of Battle of Britain, Mosquito Squadron, Midway etc etc and likes nothing better than to get one of my old unbuilt Monograms from the attic and get stuck in to both. Interestingly he always asks at Christmas or Birthday or pocket money time for 1/72 kits which he prefers to 1/72. I 've mentioned this before and it is because he can combine HO soldiers etc in his play. Nicky (6) has just completed his first model - Airfix Blenheim and is well on his way to folowwing dad's (and Chris's) footsteps. The next generation of modellers is alive and thriving in the Adam household. Unfortunately though they both laugh at dad's choice of biplanes and hope to convince me that real aeroplanes do have propellers but also closed cockpits and invasion stripes! As for wings, I recommend you get a knife with long, curved blade... a pocketknife, suitably sharpened to razor sharpness will do, and SCRAPE the insides of the wing's leading and trailing edges to follow the curvature of the outside surface. If you simply sand the wing on a flat surface you will end up with flat ledges at the leading and trailing edges...this is no good if you have to plank the underside with thin sheet or use the vacformed undersides. If you do use the latter you have to scrape the inside surfaces in the same manner to ensure a thin trailing edge. The most common problem I see with builtup vacforms is that the builder simply did not take off enough material between the wing halves and the wing is too thick >> Thank you, Bob, for this tip. I tried it last night on the lower wing of the H.B. W.18, and it works great. I had block sanded the underside of the lower wing, and while I had an airfoil shape to the wing, there was still a ridge at the leading edge. So I took a curved blade and started scraping and voila, I had a realy nice 'faired-in' look to the leading edge. And I found a real eye-blaster for a Spad XIII. The question is, is it a real scheme at all, or completely made up? It's on a display (ie hand-carved wood at 300 bucks) model. The A/C is basically broad red and white stripes overall -- stripes running fore and aft across the wing surfaces and along the fuselage. The cowling/nose area and vertical tail are dark blue with white stars. The aircraft has the usual large roundels on the wings, and a weird (indistinguishable in my picture) logo on the fuselage side. I get the picture: it's basically a flying Old Glory. And it looks great -- question is, does anyone know whether this scheme has any basis in history at all? I'm prepared to allow a bit of latitude about whether it actually flew in France in 1914-1918, but I'd like to be sure that the aircraft did actually exist before painting it that way... The latest OtF is a *must* for list members. I've always thought that those members not part of OtF were missing out. Now, however, I am more than convinced. The issue starts out, via the editorial, talking about the new chapters, as well as OverTheFront.com. There's supposed to be a website there. I spelled it as it appears in the magazine. The wonderous pieces, though, are those on the Georgia chapter, the seminar last summer, and the Dayton fly-in. We can finally place some faces to names. List members names that I recognise in the pictures: Ken Greenfield; Joe Alcober; Carlos Valdes. There are other people's pictures there, but none that "jumped" off the page at me. We can also finally place a face to Barry Stettler of Rosemont. The neatest section is the one on last summer's seminar. There are a bunch of model pictures, a couple from names known to the list. Here are the names of the modelers with model pictures: Ron Lowry; Russell Becker; Fred Hensing; Bob Sheldon; Mike Muth (!); Alan Durkota; Ron Mayo; Tom Darcy; and Bob Wheeler. If you see your name, then well done!! These are wonderful models, worthy of being pictured in OtF. There is also a section on WW1 on the web, and of course Al's page plays a significant part. Erik Pilawskii's and Randy Ray's pictures are part of the article. (As if their ego's weren't big enough. ) Oh yea, there are other articles, as well. ;-) Overall, as I already said, an issue *everyone* on the list *must* get. Oh, while you're paying for this issue-year, be sure and subscribe for 1997! I'll post more later, because the latest WW1 Aero came, as well. When it rains, it pours. However, if you want to save money, then do as I did, and buy large Plastruct I- or T-beam. Does just as well. Also, I believe the r/c section of your hobby shop carries the same material in the same shape that the "T-AL" system is in. Check it out. Ove the years, I have collected a bunch of old "Rivette-velle" 1/72 WWII kits at modest prices to bring them up right! My advise is to go to a hobby flea market and get these at $1. to 2 a pop and save them for a rainy day ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 97 18:25:32 PST From: "Shelley Goodwin" To: wwi Subject: Smer Message-ID: <9701188563.AA856319117@mx.Ricochet.net> Thanks to everyone for preventing the onset of Smer withdrawl symptoms, such as hoarding inferior kits out of fear.
