When you think about it and come right down to it, most Pfalz' had simple color schemes. Most were overall silbergrau (silver-gray), with nothing else but markings. However, there were a few more "colorful" birds. My D.III I finished as von Buttlar's, so it's got a red nose, while the rest of the bird is overall blue on the uppersurfaces, and sky-blue on the lower. However, there is one scheme that really catches the eye. In the Albatross (being the publisher of Windsock and the Datafiles's) book _von Richthofen's Flying Circus_, there is a color plate of a D.IIIa in Jasta 10 where the forward fuselage was yellow; the rest of the fuselage either red or black ("red" is the color in the color plate - for those that have the book, I was told that the printer screwed up and made it too "orangy"); and the wings were left silbergrau. This scheme is way too cool. Speaking of this book (vR.F.C.) it's a must if you're really interested in colors. It has quite a few Pfalz color plates. Another good source is if you can find an *original* release of the Meikraft Pfalz D.III/IIIa. It came with two large decal sheets, which enabled you to finish (I think) 10 machines. For me, another great scheme are the Pfalz' as flown by Jasta 7. Fuselage is overall black, while the wings were covered in (I believe) five-color lozenge. There is only one other series of fighter that I consider had more schemes than the Pfalz machines; that being the Albatros single-seaters. The Pfalz machines, though, sure have a much better "line" to them, though, don't they? ;-) Matt mbittner@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Feb 1997 20:09:18 -0600 From: "Bill Ciciora" To: "WWI Model List" Subject: 1/48 Liberty Engine? I've been trying to see how much work it would be to fix the engines in the Aurora DH-10 kit (considerable), and the right price might sway me to go aftermarket. Roll Models? Sopwith Hobbies? Battle Hobbies does not list one by Aeroclub, and I've heard that Engines & Things (don't know if they make one either) is best avoided. The closest to the scale you want would be the engines in the Glencoe Martin MB-2 kit, which at 1/64 (?) are too small :-( I'll defer further comments to better informed list members. One of my favorites. I followed the colour scheme specified in the kit and it looks great (IMHO!). As usual I used Xtracolour which Pegasus specify anyway. There are two things I'm not sure of, though: what scale, and if it's available now. Can any others help?
