Snowy day. No flying. Worked in our barracks most of the day. Wrote letters to Uncle Lock Mackie. I wanted very much to go out for a flight over the lines after luncheon but heavy snow clouds were much too low. It's very dangerous going over the enemy lines at very low altitudes as machine gun fire is very apt to bring one down. Felt quite tired by to-night. No mail came for one today and I wish some letters from the States would please arrive very soon. from the War Diary of E.C.C. Escadrille on repose all day so did a good deal of work with Soubiran building and arranging our sleeping room and we finished it up sufficiently to sleep in it to-night. We're pretty settled in our new quarters now and very comfortable. Lieut. de Laage, the Captain, and Lufberry and some of the older ones gave us all a very interesting discussion, after dinner, on methods of aerial attack and defense and other tactics. Received a mighty nice letter from Dave Wheeler who wrote it from St John, New Brunswick, Canada. He's still trying to secure a medical commission in the British forces so as to get over here again. Good old Dave! I sure wish him every success for I'd love to see him and his wife again soon. from the War Diary of E.C.C. And it appears that the 'M' and 'L' were stamped direct onto the cowl. Maybe we'll never know until the French tome comes out, this spring. Good luck. What you describe is remarkably like the old brass data plates for the brew kettles at Celis. These are (I think) sand castings about 1/4 X 1/2 meter. >From close examination it looks as if the letters and surrounding framing were pressed into a bed of sand or other matrix to form the mold and molten brass poured on. This caused them to be rendered in relief which was filed and polished. The rough background was painted black. My guess for M-S is brass with background painted black for contrast. However in the field it could have been repainted to match the paint on the cowling. I repainted ours in Sea Blue Gloss to match the tiles on the walls of the brewhouse! Cheers! If you can find a very thin photo-etched razor saw, I find that it works very well on seperately cast cylinders. Aeroclub motors are another matter. My saws are by the now-defunct TriMaster. I recently saw such a saw (Argh!) mentioned on rec.models.scale but didn't copy the message. You might want to inquire there. Cheers! Second: my old machine gave up the ghost and, after deep thought, I opted for a new machine rather than fight the old one. The new machine is great lots of bells and whistles. Sprung for the new WWI flight sim "Flying Corps" by Empire. Haven't loaded it yet as I have to get this machine squared away. Of note is the copy of "Practical Flying" which is a reprint of a 1918 manual written by Flight-Lieutenant W. G. McMinnies, R. N. Two hundred and thirteen pages with illustrations. Real wild. Got mine at Best Buy for $37.88 which includes our sales tax of 8.25%. This is about $10 less than Empire's discount offer to me. Hopefully my old Hard drives are still ok so I can get some (too damned much) data I need. Wish me luck. Glad to be back and now to read the 429 posts to the list that are sitting in my mail box Cheers, Bill Bill Bacon wbacon@netjava.net .. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Feb 1997 16:08:14 -0500 From: Carlos Valdes To: wwi Subject: Re: Assistanace requested. Message-ID: <32F3B0BE.2549@conted.gatech.edu> Larry, Here are the closest matches to the names you provided among the German aces, according to Above the Lines by N. Franks et al.: Paul Achilles, Leutnant zur See, served with the Seefrontstaffel and Marine-Feld Jasta V. 8 victories, all in 1918. Apparently survived the war. Heinrichh Kroll, Oberleutnant, served with Jastas 9 and 24, which he commaded. Awarded the Blue Max, 3-29-18. 33 victories, shot down twice. Died in 1930 of pneumonia, born in 1894. Since you're interested in these guys, why not join the list? I mentioned last week I'd put up an image gallery on my website dedicated to WWI aircraft, and would take submissions in the form of e-mailed or snail-mailed images that were of interest to the members on the list. Well, it's up and running now, and has a lot of stuff in it. Right now, most of it is fairly general, and the color profiles are more for an approximation than accurate (they are from older, less accurate sources). I did, however, post the pics of the Hanriot HD-1s in USN service as discussed last week in the "USS Texas Sopwith Pup/Hanriot" thread if anyone is interested. Check it out at: If you have a submission, send it to me at as an attached .jpg file. I'll gladly add it as time allows. Hope you all enjoy!
