I had speculated about the existance of an Oeffag-built D.III at Krakow, based on the comments of Tomasz Goworek. Having received back my copy of Jerzy Pawlak's superlative book on the subject, _Polskie Eskadry w Latach 1918-1939_, I thought I would follow up. Unfortunately, I now have to say that I doubt such an example exists. Though he painstakingly described the disposition of *many* such a/c, in not one case does Pawlak mention a surviving Oef.D.III, despite the fact that this type seems to be a personal favorite for him. Furthermore, he discusses the Krakow collection at length (with which he would seem to be associated somehow), again without such mention. I'd say that looks pretty bleak.... OTH, I guess final confirmation will have to await my Fall trip to E.Europe-- I'll make it a point to run into somebody with the Polish collection(s) and find out for sure. Ah, well.... bummer.... Although they screwed up last year, and list it gives me a chance to see the *real* Des Moines crowd of the Hawkeye Modelers. BTW, the contest is being put on by the Plastic Stur...uh, Surgeons. Will I have WW1 there? We'll see. I'm trying to fix up my Pegasus SSW D.III, so we'll see... Erik Hey I'm bummed as well. I, for one, appreciate your following up on this. The one thing I am holding out hope for from any of the Polish collections is for a surviving scrap of the Austrian "sworl" printed fabric to turn up. Perhaps then we could have resolution of the question of what colors it was printed in and how many there were, three or four. Thanks Erik. Or as the snow falls, as the case may be (only 6 1/2 feet this winter, as opposed to 9 feet last year) for those of us on the east slope of the beautiful Cascades. Stonto and the others are all 206-er's (Washingtonians have this curious habit of identifying each other by their area codes - however, the addition of 360 in parts of Western WA has now muddied things up a bit!), and they rarely see the white stuff... So now that winter - the peak of the modeling season - is over with here in the Northern hemisphere, how did everyone do? I managed to complete a Smer DH2 (first attempt at a pusher - the rigging! the rigging! AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!), a Glencoe DIII (stop laughing, guys, I can hear you already), a Lindberg SE5a, (turned out exceptionally good, for an inexpensive kit), and got a start on the Glencoe Pfalz (may get a chance to finish it once mosquito season starts, when you don't dare venture outside if you value your blood supply)... As for scale...1/48 all the way here. I know there's been some posts recently from modelers who do both 1/48 <<>> 1/72, but the bi-scaleual lifestyle just isn't for me.... :-) Mark R. lotahr@ncw.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 1996 00:05:50 -0700 From: lothar@ncw.net (mark) To: wwi Subject: Re: 1/48 problem Message-ID: <199604120705.AAA07536@bing.ncw.net> >I have to admit that am keeping some 1/48 stuff and will probably build it >in a closet when nobody is around. I know there's been some posts > recently from modelers who do both 1/48 <<>> 1/72, but the bi-scaleual > lifestyle just isn't for me.... :-) i certainly can't claim to be bi-scaleular, the only 72 i have is luftwaffe with no propellor, and bears a close family relationship with the accursed 109...and it's doubtful if it ever flew. i think i have to do penance for it. A gaming group here in the Twin Cities (which expects snow today!), plays EHQ's 'Red Baron', a fast, but engaging WWI aerial combat miniatures game. Our group uses 1/144th lead and pewter models. We can get Skytrex models, and I have discovered an Italian firm, Mamoli, whose models are quite nice (some of which I can buy through Model Expo currently). Does anyone know of other sources for 1/144th WWI aeroplane models, plastic or metal (or wood or amber....)?
