Revell's 1/720 LZ 129 Hindenburg is out. It's a decent kit and a fine edition to the small number of airship kits available. While some may disagree, I think 1/720 is a convenient scale for airships and fits nicely into a 1/700 - 1/720 warship collection. Revell's Zep has two nicely formed hull halves split horizontally. The hull is formed of relatively thin plastic and care should be taken when glueing the two halves to ensure they are properly aligned. There are some very faint sink holes which need attention in the upper hull half. The nose cap and tail cone are separate parts (as are the rudders and elevators) and will need just a touch of light sanding to blend into the hull. The clear windows are a nice touch, particularly in this small scale. A stand is included that fits into a flashed over hole in the bottom of the hull. There's also a simple mooring mast. (The kit would make an interesting diorama with a bunch of 1/700 P/E figures.) The only real omission is the lack of swastikas for the vertical fins. Revell does include the red flag with a white disk and it shouldn't be too difficult to find some swastikas of the appropriate size. Up ship! Yes, they are wonderful, but keep in mind that they're vacs, so there's naturally more work than an Eduard. Not only with the sanding out of parts, but you have to supply cockpit (although some do come with some of the parts on the sheet, it's best to replaces some of those anyway) and the struts. If you're up for the challenge, you can't go wrong building Sierra Scale. But be aware that they are vacs. Time for a survey, bring in the market consultants.... Aaaww, c'mon and give us 1/48 scale bigots a break. Count the number of WWI subjects already offered in 1/72 and compare that to what's available in 1/48. It makes perfect sense that the 1/48 scale market is ripe for the taking and Dragon (for a while anyway) and Eduard are undoubtedly making lots o money catering to those of us who prefer the "Scale of Kings" (tm - see Thorn, Jesse). The shift of emphasis from 1/72 to 1/48 has already happened in the WWII aircraft modeling genre, and it's only natural that it leak over into Great War subjects as well. Besides, there's a whole new breed of WWI enthusiasts who started life as 1/48 WWII modelers. Bored with the glut of 109s and P-51s, and enamored by the mainstream quality of DML's and Eduard's latest injection offerings, we've taken a liking to these funny little fabric-covered multi-wings of old. We now spend most of our hobby dollar (pound, yen, ruble, etc.) on WWI subjects and reference materials instead of Minicraft's 23rd P-38 variant("Oh, look, it's the Droop Snoot...Zzzzzz"). That, my friends, is a *huge* market...and it's good news for *every* WWI aircraft enthusiast. There's nothing like the smell of Solvaset in the morning... Also > are these models say more work than a typical Eduard injected offering. I have a bunch of these and have built the Phonix D.I, Gotha WD7, and the HB W12. The fit of the parts is above average for a vac e.g. - the wing halves and fuselage halves are matched in size and outline. You usually get white metal engine, prop, and weapons, however, recent offerings now include these items as injection molded plastic. The shape and outlines of the kits generally agree with the popular documentation (Windsock etc). You will have to supply decals and scratch build an interior and all of the struts. PE sheets from Tom's come in handy here. Eduard has a much better PE sheet and the quality of the injection molded parts is usually better. Remember, these are vacs and require more work than most injection molded kits. --Jesse ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 10:28:42 -0500 From: amadon@pcix.com (Gerald P. Relatively acurate (I want to spend my time on the details, not correcting the Revell Dr.1) 2. A cheap-o injection molded kit. 3. Still in production (so I don't have to search for it). As a builder of 1/48 stuff in WWI, (he stumbled into the room knocking over a standing lamp and stepping on the cat) I have little to contribute. BUT on the other hand, there are some very interesting non-WWI subjects in 1/72. One of my favorites (some people say that there are accuracy problems but I don't know what they're talking about) is the Italeri Hs126. Fits like a dream, good detail. Yeah, a few years old but still worth building. Plus it comes in this very chic butterscotch colored plastic. Most of the pursuit aircraft of WWI were mighty small; in 1/72 its hard to see the damn things! That's why I choose 1/48 for that. I mix and match scales you see... Now for 1/48!! Take a look at the new Eduard Albatross DV. Nice kit. They have really improved their molding process a lot. That was their chief detractor as far as I'm concerned. They also switched from brass to steel; too bad. I like brass better. oops! This isn't cheap-o; that was #2 criterion. Until later .... Unfortunately, the shift has occurred in most genres. I noticed this in a couple of places. First, at our annual kit exchange. Out of ~25 models, there were only *four* in 1/72nd. The other place I notice it at is during our club meeting raffle. Four kits were raffled, one in 1/72nd. Also, the kits they have purchased for the next four or so raffles are in 1/48th or larger. I guess everyone's getting old and feeble...;-) Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 12:32:18 -0500 From: "Matt Bittner" To: wwi Subject: Re: Blue Rider Decals (warning, long) Message-ID: <199603201233.MAA29092@cso.com> On 20 Mar 96 at 13:18, mcclure@skynet.litc.lockheed. typed diligantly: > Does anybody have a complete listing of Blue Rider Decals that > they could post?
