Just received my package from Usk with much expensive and neat stuff. Kit Review-- Czechmaster Resin Roland D.VIb 1/72 Approximately a mid-run CM effort (the kit is number 142 out of the current total of 263), the Roland D.VIb is a worthy representation of the actual machine, and should build-up as a fine kit. It is molded in the 'standard' pea-green CM resin, with particularly clean finish and no visible flash of any kind. No imperfections are present on this example, a trend I have seen repeated in other CM kits. This resin accepts equally well both CA and Polystyrene cements, and shows little tendency to 'melt' under over-vigorous application or spills. A thorough washing is advisable prior to assembly. The kit contains 7 major components: upper wing, lower wing, 2 fuselage halves, 2 horiz. stabilizers, fin/rudder; and, 25 small parts attached to a very thin resin 'sheet'(a la the usual CM method): control stick, exhaust manifold, two nice guns, cylinder head, seat, radiator pipe, propeller, wheels, ventral strake/tail skid, AND (at last for CM!) a full set of fairly well executed struts and cabanes. No decals are included. For my own example, no instructions were provided. Kit price was $20 (US). On the positive side, however, the kit's detail is good. The wings are very thin and conform well to cross-section form and camber. Referring to the classic Harleyford "Fighter Aircraft of the 1914-1918 War" (my only 1/72nd drawings of the type), the upper wing matches the scale drawing very well, with the aileron horn balance being perhaps 1mm too narrow on both sides. The lower wing appears to match these drawings precisely. All rear tail surfaces appear to be correct in size and shape. Though the characteristic 'planking' detail along the fuselage is raised, it is delicately executed and should respond well to various dry washes. I expect that the wood effect should be excellent. My over-all impression is that the Roland D.VIb represents a typical Czechmaster effort-- well formed and beautifully detailed, but too expensive and without such expected amenities as decals and even instructions! In skilled hands there is simply no doubt that it will produce a superb model, however, and I intend to begin mine (with or without skill) at this very moment! We meet at Klas Restaurant in Cicero, on the second Saturday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. That is, except when we have special meetings. In May, we are going to Dwight IL to see Chuck Brady's full scale Fokker D.VI. In July, we are having a fly-in at the Belvidere IL airport (Stearman rides!). With any luck Gerry Thornhill will be able to get his Gnome-powered Camel started this year, and Chuck will be done with the D.VI. See if you can tag along with Greg for one of these. It's always fun to put a face with the cyberspace persona. And this offer goes out to any list member that happens to be in the Chicago area around one of our meeting times.
