Unfortunately, time is short with a nine month old crawling around the house, so these type of things are the first to get canned. Anybody going to KC-Con on 23 March? Let me know, so we can stop at the table Steve's Pfalz D.VIII and Halberstadt are at and drool all over them (which will ensure us winning at other contests ;-)). Sorry to confuse you. I wasn't going to bring this up on this list, but the color I want is for the I-16, hence the ;-) in my original message. If I said I just wanted the article, someone would have told me to photocopy it (and Charles did anyway...unfortunately, the only color printers I know of locally are controlled by the company (Kinko's), and they don't allow the copying of coyrighted material, regardless of the use, and they have *no* color copiers for "public" use). Again, sorry for the confusion...I just mentioned the Albatros article so someone would feel sorry for me and sell me their copy. ;-) <---- Note Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 1996 07:28:51 -0800 From: tsunami0@ix.netcom.com (Anthony & Ellen Sanchez ) To: wwi Subject: To Shane, sorry I can't mail you direct Message-ID: <199603131528.HAA11915@ix10.ix.netcom.com> Group, excuse my using the groups mail to do this but I can't mail Shane (in Australlia), directly. Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 1996 15:56:10 -0900 From: The Flying Wrench To: wwi Subject: A kit review format for the unwashed Message-ID: <199603140056.PAA10860@anchor> The Wrench suggests: This is probably redundant, but I have given a format below to add some uniformity to modelers kit review. I do this because not everyone out there is like me. I know everything there is to know about every airplane ever made at any point in history, so I don't need this format. But for the sake of others who are less fortunate and less informed than myself, I'm sure it would greatly helpful to have information like a complete designator. This would be helpful as many modelers do not know that Nie actually stands for Niehi bottling and aircraft company. Next, a short descriptive background on the aircraft would be in order (except in the case of the DR.I, everyone knows what that one looks like). This came to light when I read the Tom's Modelwerke Nie 9/10 review. Some of the unwashed might not know just what this bird looked like, Some might not realize that it actually had four wings that rotated logitudinally about the posterior axis or that it was unusually light because it was made entirely of silkworm exuviae. Then there is scale, of course we always expect the scale to be floh/72, but what if it just happens to be that one Transylvanian Gotha G.IV kit that was actually 2/1 scale? (Rumors have it that the Germans actually ordered twelve of these kits but canceled the order when they found they did't have engines big enough to power them.) How many want a 2/1 scale Gotha? How many have a shelf that big? A media description would be nice, how often have you read a review only to find halfway through the description that the model is cast in depleted Dilithium crystals and that can only be worked with tools made of Vulcanite, 'nuff said on that part. Price and source is another point of information. OK by now your saying: "I want one, I want one, I must have one", so you call your brother Jacob and say, "Look I'll sell my birthright for this new Gotakers NgX VCUII kit". Your brother says "ALRIGHTY! But first you must take seven camel loads of gold and follow the secret trail to the Philistine's, 1/24 scale builders, camp. Then you must wait three days until the dawning of the full moon, at which time with with twelve ring-streaked, speckled lozenge . . . ." "STOP!" you say, "I said I'd sell my birthright, not go through all that and pay THAT much." Get the picture? Another nice feature for the great unwashed is the seperate listings for each catagory. Then when one of these folks want to refer back to your review for information they do not have to wade through your entire long winded, but fascinating and ever-so-insightful treatise to find the desired information. One last note, if you follow a format you don't leave anything out. Minor points - like the entire review are sure to be included. Now if you don't like my format you can always try and find someone who knows half as much as I do about airplanes and then ask him/her to come up with another format just half as good. Go ahead I dare ya'. But if you can't (and you can't) you are always welcome to try and improve on perfection and add on to this format.
