Scott Head http://web-hou.iapc.net/~smh ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 1996 16:20:59 +0800 (HKT) From: Jose Valenciano To: wwi Subject: all modelers/SSW D.3 construction Message-ID: Greetings everyone, A week or so back, someone had asked for comments regarding Eduard SSW D3 construction. I gave him all I could think of off hand. But as I am now back finishing the kit I realised that I could have been of more help. Now and again I will be posting construction notes on the various problems encountered, details that can be improved as I make a model. Here I write about the Eduard Siemens Schukert D.III. Since I am in the middle of completing the plane this list of comments is not complete and I will post more as progress is made. I invite you to post your own comments (improvements or corrections) regarding my methods. Anything that will help others ease construction or avoid mistakes are welcome. Also, I encourage others to write construction tips they might have regarding other projects. For example, I would want to have this sort of info before I start my Hannover D.III. Siemens Schukert D.III FUSELAGE SIDES: I opened up all air intakes this way.... I made an indentation in the center of the intake opening. Using the indentation as a starting point, with a tiny drill bit (#80?) I drilled a hole diagonally down into the fuselage. With my moto-tool set at the slowest speed possible, and with the smallest cutter the dental supply had, I slowly opened the hole up from the outside and the inside (using the hole made by the drill bit as a guide. By grinding away from both sides I got an L shaped hole, horizontal from the outside and vertical from the inside. I cleaned up the intake corners with a new xacto blade. Remember that there are also intakes on the center of the lower wing. Those longish intakes I left alone. Maybe I'll just paint the openings black (or a much darker version of the fuselage color. The look of the intakes I opened up can later be improved by painting the insides black and using a light color on the intake's rim. I glued the fuselage sides together. WINGS: Wings were warped/curved upwards towards the tips (common problem in Eduard kits). I boiled some water in a large pan. Gripped the wing with metal pincers that had their tips wrapped in masking tape. Gently swilled the wing around in the boiling water for about 20 secs. Remove wing and immediately lay it on a flat piece of glass. While holding the wing down against the glass, dip in a pail of cool water, or hold under a tap. The lower wing is a bit more complicated in that a piece of the fuselage is moulded with it so the wing can't be straightened on the glass. Solve this by adding a piece of glass on each side of the center, thereby leaving a channel like space that clears the fuselage area. Trailing edges were thick and had a lot of flash. I filed and sanded the undersides of the wings. Yes, detail was lost but I feel that the undersurface should be more or less flat anyway, and rib tapes will help define the ribs later on. I scalloped the trailing edge between ribs by shaping it with sandpaper wrapped around a bottle. Use a bottle with a large diameter. One with a diameter of about 4-5 inches would be ok. GLUING THE BOTTOM WING TO THE FUSELAGE. After gluing fuselage sides together, I jumped to step 3 and glued the bottom wing on (leaving the tail for later): Making sure that the bottom wing is well aligned is difficult because the fuselage has no flat sides to guide me. I could have aligned the wing by looking at the model from the front and eyeballing it using the intakes as a guide, or laying a ruler across the cockpit opening but didn't trust my judgement. Instead, I lay the fuselage on graphing paper glued to a hard surface and using the fuselage center join line, made sure the fuselage didn't tilt to one side (dorsal and ventral join aligned vertically. I proped the fuselage up with a popsicle stick jig and inserted the lower wing and checked its alignment by measuring the wingtips' height from the graphing paper. The rear join of the wing center protrudes. Sand it flush. The way I attached the lower wing may seem like an over-kill method but I did this because all other alignments (tail, undercarriage, etc.) will be based on the lower wing and not the fuselage. INTERIOR: All I did was paint most everything (wooden parts) with a tan and washed with diluted red-brown (burnt sienna?) oil. Beautiful effect. I thickened the control column and hand grips with epoxy. There are two long protrusions on top of the handgrip piece. I think they represent the cables leading to the machine guns. You might want to attach sprue here. I replaced PE17 (fuel pump?) with something more 3 dimensional. I inserted the whole cockpit tub into the fuselage. When I was sure that it was aligned, I applied 5min. epoxy between it and the fuselage walls. I glued the fuselage decking at this point. HORIZONTAL TAIL: Dry fitting the horizontal tail to the fuselage I notice that it tipped towards the left. I shaved some plastic away from the right front horizontal surface of the fuselage (where it mates with the tail). I then dry fitted the horiz. tail. I put thin plastic shims on the front horiz. surfaces on both left and right sides of the fuselage, sanding this area until the tail is level (looking from behind) in relation to the lower wing and the dorsal area is flush with that of the fuselage's. There were gaps between the tail and the fuselage on the horizontal mating surface. With a needle, I fed super glue into this area and inserted thin plastic shims, cutting excess away when the glue dried. I cleaned up the horiz. join by applying some epoxy to it and swiping excess away with the wooden end of a paintbrush. The vert. tail I'll glue later. SPINNER: Although I haven't done it yet, I plan to improve the intakes. Eduard would have you filing away the plastic intakes and replacing with photoetch. Are they kidding?! I plan to grind an opening as I did in the fuselage. Never mind if I eat some of the spinner away. I'll then shape some sprue to cover the portion of the spinner that was eaten away, glue it on and do some final filing/sanding. I'm doing this next so I'll let you know how it goes. That's all I have for now. Don't know when you'll hear from me about progress. In a month? a year? Hell, this is just a hobby... isn't it? Bye for now. ********************************************************************* Joey Valenciano WW1 modeller, teacher, jazz musician, joeyval@pusit.admu.edu.ph sitarist tel. (urge to make > this a flying model) Almost all my dealings with Propag is to find others. However, they're 1/72nd "wood" decals went on wonderfully, although I did use them only on the interior, so there were no "bumps" to go around. I've "tried" to use their decals that came with the KP Piper Cub, and the KP Avia BH-3. Both were a joke, though I did use the "serials" for the BH-3, even though they were a bit "yellow". IMNSHO replace Propag, especially in the older kits. Model Cellar Production makes single 120mm resin figures for most armies and 1/35 scale Brittish resin figures. I'm sure there are other wargaming manufacturers that do 15mm and 25mm WWI figures - just not which ones off the top of my head. Have him check Wargames Illustrated, The Courrier or other similar magazines for more info too. -Al ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 08:16:35 -0500 From: "Matt Bittner" To: wwi Subject: Re: WW1 Modeler Needs Help (fwd) Message-ID: <199603120816.IAA15362@cso.com> On 11 Mar 96 at 16:24, Charles Hart typed diligantly: > Perhaps Al, consideration should be given to making a page on the > WEB site with a bibliography of various reference books and a list of all > the published Datafiles and the like. The Revell figures are uniformally nice. Tauro of Italy makes several WWI Figures in 1/35 scale. I have run in to several 54mm metal and plastic figures but I can't recall the manufacturers. Try Military Modelling magazine from the UK. It usually covers the figure scene well. I also recommend checking the FSM modelling guides, 3rd edition. It has a fairly cpomprehensive list of figures and manufactureers. HTH, Glen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 19:40:33 -0500 (EST) From: ENDYL@delphi.com To: wwi Subject: Tom's Modelwerke Nie 9/10 Message-ID: <01I29H1NUXPE9BWSXW@delphi.com> This is the first resin kit I've purchased. This is what I found: Two photo-etched sheets: One is a set of skis for the Russian winter version. One is assorted details (i.e. seat belts, prop boss, cockpit foot rests, etc) They are nicely done. Cast white-metal parts: Wheels, undercarriage, prop, engine, wing struts (outer wing-to-wing), axle and seat. Parts have some flash (easily cleaned-up) and some slightly bent (another easy fix). No struts for the fuselage-wing structure (cabane ?). Must have been an oversight for the lack of these. Included is a piece of strut stock (plastic) for use in attaching the skis to the undercarriage. Resin: Wings molded fairly smooth, minimum of flash, pins holes on the leading edge of the two lower wings. Fuselage appears to be well done except that the flash on the underside is very thick which adds to the thickness of the fuselage, lots of sanding will be needed here. Cowl: Nicely molded in one piece but again too thick on the mounting surface(must be the way resin kits are done) and a large molded rib directly on top of the cowl, this will require some real effort to clean up. Tailplane/rudder moldings are nicely done. The resin parts are in three different colors (matchbox ?) a linen-like color, a pea green, and the cowl in mustard (grey poupon). Not a big deal but may require the use of a primer to insure colors coats come out even. One small sheet of decals, national markings for Russian machine plus one personal marking for Lt. Mrochkovsky (Nie 10). Instructions: Barely adequate (just my .02), one plan view (front, top, side) and ideas for converting the 9 to the two-seat 10. No machine guns, interior will need to be constructed using plastic/wood and the included etched parts. Not a kit for the inexperienced builder (This one may not get done for a long time!). Again, this is the first resin kit I own, these are my opinions based on that fact. This may be quite normal for a resin kit. (Can anyone provide comparisons of other resin kits?)
