At the end of our messages, we put "np - some music" to designate what we're currently listening to (the "np" means "now playing"). I propose - for those who are interested - that we have our own sign off. Put "nb" for "now building", and then what's currently on your workbench. If you want ridicule, then put whatever you're working on. However, I suggest that we keep it to a WW1 model. Also, we go one extra on the musicians list. We put "nr" and then the name of a book that we're "now reading". We could do this as well, regardless of the material. Heck, we could also use "nu" for "next up", and then put the next kit that's in the "queue". What do ya'all think? nb - Eduard Albatros D.Va nu - Pegasus LFG Roland D.II (finishing) nr - Nothing by Null Matt mbittner@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 6:12:32 -0700 (PDT) From: MCCLURE@skynet.litc.lockheed.com To: wwi Subject: Re: BETW: sort of, looking for reference books Message-ID: <961011061232.2023817f@skynet.litc.lockheed.com> Thanks, Riordan. The most readable book on this is The Ignorant Armies by E.M. Halliday. I seem to remember The White Armies of Russia by George Stuart was a good survey of the ground campaigns. Ive also got some odds & ends on Latvian and Estonian Campaigns and (WWI vintage)tank & armored car actions in the Russian Civil War. I had to at least mention the Great War so as not to get harangued by the others on this list! Not sure what the Sign markins say, but the photo in the Datafile looks like the cowl is in a dark color (asking Greg VW about this once, he mentioned either dark olive, or black), while the rest of the plane is in "typical" D.VIII colors (olive wing, with lozenge fuselage). The picture shows the plane to be "Fok. E V 156/18". Rudder is while, and the wheel covers look to be either the color of the cowl, or (more likely) the olive of the upper wing. A.S.947. McCook Field, overall olive drab, red, white and blue rudder stripes, US star and circle insignia on both surfaces of wings, A .S.947 in large letters on fuselage sides. Guns removed B. E.V 197/18, Lt Stefan Stec, Lwowska Grupa Lotnicka, Polish Air Force , 1918. Lozenge covered fuselage and landing gear airfoil. Wings, forward fuselage upper decking, horizontal stab, fin, cowl, wings, struts in khaki, red and white Polish insignia on wings, fuselage. Red and white rudder and aft portion of fin. No wheel covers. See Datafile photo on bottom of page 13. C. E.V 153/18, Jasta 6, Lt Richard Wenzl, 1918. Typical Jasta 6 markings with white fuselage band, with two narrow black bands. See Datafile photos on bottom of page 9. D. D.VIII Royal Netherlands Air Force. Overall olive drab, Dutch insignia on wings and fuselage, white rudder. E. E.V 156/18, Marine Jasta 2, Lt Theo Ostercamp. Fuselage divided into 7 black and 6 yellow bands, including cowl. lozenge covered horizontal stab and landing gear airfoil. Dark green wings and struts. Yellow wheel covers. White rudder, lozenge covered forward fin. VERY striking, but I've never seen any references to this scheme. F. D.VIII, 15 Squadron, Polish Air Force. Overall khaki. Polish insignia on wings, fuselage, and rudder. No wheel covers. Some thoughts on the Sign kit: Molded in black, parts are not as nice as the Eduard D.VIII. Shape of the wing is a little off, fuselage sides inaccurate in the area of the plywood formers. Decent PE parts (again, not as nice as those with Eduard's D.VIII kit) including wire wheels. Cast metal engine, prop and tires for use with PE wire wheels. Odd looking lozenge for top and bottom. Good registration, but some bleed over on decal sheet.
