Any >"streaking" appears >to be only due to the thinness of the paint. I concede there is a 'difference' between tonal qualities of the "white" rudder and the tonal qualities of the horizontal stabilizer stripes. 'Cept to my eye, the stripes look -lighter- than does the rudder. And, the stripes on the horizontal stabilzer seem to match the tonal quality of the the white surrounds to the balkenkruezes on the top of the upper wing. Now the rudder is in shadow which could account for why it is darker. But darker than -orange- stripes on the horizontal stabilizer? That seems a stretch, especially as the tonal quality of the stripes seems to match the upper wing cross surrounds. I'm still thinking that the stripes are probably white. >As an aside Gabriel discussed his color scheme in an interview in the >late thirties >when he was a "film star". The color schem shown in the new Windscok >Fabric Special >No.1 is right on the money. I'm not disputing that Willi may have had orange stripes over a light blue tail at one time or other on one aircraft or other (although pilots' recollections on aircraft markings are -notoriously- unreliable!) but I guess I'm still unconvinced that -this- photo shows that scheme. I'm kinda ambiguous on whether this photo shows streaked olive or light blue but comparing the tonal qualities of the tail stripes to the tonal qualities of the upper wing cross surrounds seems just about a perfect match. Thus, for the aircraft in this photo at least, white seems a more likely call for the tail stripes than orange. Ah, well, who knows? This is the sorta thing which makes WW1 interesting. If it was a photo of a Bf 109, -everyone- would know the camouflage colors. Me, I too am interested in the 'tweeners! In fact I am producing a 1/6 scale R/C model of the Northrop Gamma! (Sorry for the absolutely shameless commercial plug......but I need to sell a few)! Request from War office came for volunteers to go to the Romanian Front. Thought it through and put in my name. Think it will be a big thing to get down there this winter and there should be fine chance for promotion. Wrote to Major Parker & Mr Slade about it. I want the support of the Franco-American financially & otherwise. Went up for three fair flights in late p.m. Hope I get to Nieuport soon. ******************* AN AMERICAN FOR LAFAYETTE, THE DIARIES OF E.C.C.
