WHERE: Sikorsky VS-44A Restoration Hangar (MAP ENCLOSED) WHEN: Saturday, October 5, 1996---9:30 AM gathering 10:00 AM start WHAT? A Fighter by Igor Sikorsky? That s the reaction when many aviation historians hear that Igor Sikorsky created a fighter plane, the S-16, and that a flying reproduction is being built. The spectacular image of the Il'ya Muromets series of multi-engine bombers has obscured the fact that, yes, Sikorsky designed and produced a biplane (with four wheels, but a single engine) in 1915/16 in Russia - and that Sikorsky S-16 fighter is coming to life in Stratford, Connecticut, today. From what I understand there is a high probability that our hosts Harry Penber and Phil Spalla will have a very unique object belonging to the S-16 on hand for close inspection, curious? Come and find out for yourself! On Saturday, October 5, 1996, Atlantic Coast Chapter members will have a chance to meet the S-16, and to hear all about it s dramatic birth and re-birth, through the medium of Sergei Sikorsky, son of the noted designer. This will take place at the fall meeting of the Chapter to be held at one of the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation plants in Stratford, Connecticut, more specifically at the VS-44A Restoration Hangar (MAP ENCLOSED) Sergei I. Sikorsky was born in New York in 1925, grew up in Connecticut watching his father, Igor I. Sikorsky, designing the great Clipper seaplanes and the VS-300 helicopter (in which he flew as a passenger, his father at the controls). In World War II he served in a joint helicopter squadron, developing the earliest rescue hoists and some of the first helicopter SAR missions. After attending the University of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy, he had a 40-year career in the world-wide manufacture and marketing of Sikorsky helicopters, retiring from Sikorsky Aircraft in 1992 as Vice President, Special Projects. He remains active as a Sikorsky Corporation consultant. The second featured speaker will be Chapter member Walt Kudlick, from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Walt will present an illustrated lecture on Three Royal Flying Corps Pilot POWs. It promises to be a hair-raising account of eluding death, capture, escapes attempted, made and foiled. Walt is a founding member of the New England Chapter of the Western Front Association, a member of the Great War Society, and a long-time member of the Atlantic Coast Chapter of the League. He is a retired Civil Engineer and is currently working on a book about the American engineers in World War I. AUCTION TO FOLLOW 1992 PATTERN The October program will also feature an auction, to benefit you and the Chapter - so start sifting through your books, models and collectibles to see what you can do without. Spokespersons for the Sikorsky Corp. have hinted that they may be contributing items for the October 5th Auction, a challenge to Chapter members to come up with some outstanding material. As before, at our meeting at Joe Gertler s Riverhead, NY, collection, 10% of the proceeds go to the Chapter treasury. Items will be logged in during the morning session. Bidder numbers will be handed out to all attendees. Bids in 25 minimum increases - no pennies. Sellers may specify lowest bid. Cash or check payments accepted, with checks payable to Atlantic Coast Chapter. Send an advanced list of items to Auctioneer Bill Nungesser at 212 Northville Tpk, Riverhead, NY, 11901 AS SOON AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE Also, we ll have another Show-N-Tell where members share news about on-going research, projects, models, collecting, and other adventures, so have your notes, documents etc... on hand to share with everyone else! One presenter, who shall remain anonymous has some startling information to share with us all! And last but not least the backdrop will be the fully restored VS-44A which is soon to be shipped to the New England Air Museum, perhaps one of our other gracious hosts, Harry Hleva, will share some thoughts on this historic project. And, for Business, we will hold elections for the 1997 slate of Officers and Directors. Doors open at 9:30 A.M. Total cost for the catered lunch, at the site (special thanks to Tom Darcey for making this possible) as well as the normal registration fee (covers postage, etc...) will be a total of $10.00 BE THERE! Oh, one last item, according to our Treasurer Joseph Santiago, many of you, for one reason or another, have not renewed your membership. I for one realize how tight a buck is these days but please renew to keep your membership status. We are a non-profit organization and your $10 membership keeps the meetings, newsletters and trips to the Islands (Manhattan, Staten and Coney) going. PS: If you need a place to stay overnight on Friday, there are two motels in the immediate area. First choice is Marnick's Motel/Restaurant, on Long Island Sound, Tel#203-377-6288 the other is the Ramada Inn on Lordship Blvd, Tel#203-375-8866. Marnick's prices range from $75 for an ocean view, the single and the double are the same price! Or for $55 you get the land view, single or double. The Ramada is $81, at a special corporate rate. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Sep 1996 14:53:54 -0800 From: John Snyder To: wwi Subject: Reviews Message-ID: The latest issue of "Chine Lines", the newsletter of the IPMS Seaplane Special Interest Group, has reviews of Windsock Mini Datafile 1, the Albatros W4, and Windsock Datafile 55, the Brandenburg W29. The review gives both high marks, and notes their availability from Barry at Rosemont Hobbies, 7720 Main Street, Suite 5, Fogelsville PA 18051-0996. It also includes a very positive kit review of Langton Miniatures Metal Kit of the Hansa-Brandenburg W 12 in 1:200(!), one of a line of WW1 miniatures available direct from Langton Miniatures, North Trendeal, Ladock, Truro, Cornwall TR2 4QQ, UK. The review notes that the plans provide a sketch of the lozenge camo pattern for the top wing, with the blithe suggestion that the modeler paint it on! Finally is an announcement that coming from Chatham Publications (supposedly this month) is Naval Aviation in the First World War: Its Impact and Influence, written by Dick Layman, for about $36.95. I will check when I get home, but I think I have this book. I thought it was published by the Naval Institute Press last year. Perhaps I have my titles confused? At any rate, there is another book by NIP on the Curtis MF, that was recently published.
