Between the wars/ "Golden Age" stuff bores me to tears, and if we expand the scope of the mailing lists subject matter, the sheer volume will get completely out of hand. So count me in as a purist too. Let's keep it WWI <>. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 17:05:56 +0800 (GMT+0800) From: "Valenciano . Thought I wouldn't have to say this, but: how about in 1/72nd? ;-) Matt meba@cso.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 07:17:55 -0500 From: meba@cso.com To: WW1 Modelers Subject: Aviation History Message-ID: <199608090716.HAA00518@cso.com> Finally got through the Boelcke article. It appears accurate, however... My biggest complaint with this magazine is its lack of documented references. Throughout the Boelcke article quotes are being used, and numbers are thrown around. It would be nice to know where the author found his/her information. Also, at the end of each article is a "recommended reading" section, that's supposed to deal with the article in question. The one for Boelcke, while recommending some good books, does not recommend any about Boelcke himself! Instead, as an example, Kennet's _The First Air War, 1914-1918_ is listed. Sure, a good book, but one that doesn't deal specifically with Boelcke. All in all this is a good magazine to offer readers *glimpses* into aviation history. Those with more knowledge, and a larger library, will often be bored - and at times be unfortunately humored. There use to be a time when articles would start sounding like novellets, instead of fact-based historical pieces. I can only recommend Aviation History if you want a *broad* overview of aviation history - I'm lucky because my folks subscribe for "entertainment" reasons, and always send me their copies. ;-) Matt meba@cso.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Aug 1996 11:24:56 -0700 From: "Marian Hollinger, Bradley Omanson" To: wwi Subject: 9 August 1916, Buc Message-ID: <320B8278.25B4@host.dmsc.net> Fine day but very warm. Got 2 excellent flights in early a.m. Wrote to Olive, Bety and Mother and answered a nice letter from Aunt Cara which came in a.m. Out for work in late p.m. and motor stopped dead while up on my second flight. Managed to land without smashing up in a hay field. Mighty thankful for that. Crowd down at Hotel Aviatic in late evening and all had very good time. Decorated one of the moniteurs with a fake medal. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 13:34:29 -0400 (EDT) From: "PETER KILDUFF, UNIVERSITY RELATIONS, 21791" To: wwi Subject: RE: Aviation History Message-ID: <960809133429.23431e56@CCSUA.CTSTATEU.EDU> Matt: Why not address your comments to the magazine's editor? Noting, for example, that a good English-language translation of _Hauptmann Boelcke's Feldberichte_ exists. Done, I think, by Claud W. Sykes, in my view the master German translator (who also wrote under the penname "Vigilant").
