Avery Forces Capt. Medhopf, 16 Victories, Down by Frank J. Taylor (United Press Staff Correspondent) WITH THE AMERICANS IN FRANCE, July 27.-- Lieut. Walter Avery of Columbus, O., in his first air battle, brought down the noted German ace, Capt. Mendkopf, north of Chateau Thierry yesterday. HUN TAKES FALL The rival aviators came together while patrolling alone. For twenty minutes Mendkopf made futile effort to gain an advantage by tricky maneuvers. Then Avery got on the German's tail and damaged the plane so that it was forced to land within the American lines. When Medkopf learned this was Avery's initial fight he was enraged. He sulked and refused to talk. Mendkopf is credited with sixteen victims, including an American. He is one of only six German aviators who wear the cross of merit. MADE A MISTAKE Another American airman, after hearing of Avery's exploit, went out hunting on his hook this morning. He tackled a Boche and forced him down and landed to complete the capture. But he discovered that he was behind the German lines and he himself was made a prisoner. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jul 96 11:33:05 EDT From: cv3@conted.swann.gatech.edu (Carlos Valdes) To: wwi Subject: Re: 28 July 1918 Message-ID: <199607281533.LAA20320@conted.swann.gatech.edu> TWIMC: Avery's victim was Oberleutnant (not Captain, i.e. Hauptmann) Carl Menckhoff, brought down on the 25th, not the 28th. Menckhoff was the commander of Jasta 72, a Pour le Merite winner, and a victor in 39 combats, not 16 (all this from Above the Lines). Just goes to show you how inaccurate initial news reports can be. Recently some new members talked about going back into making models after long absences. That got me thinking about everyone contributing a list of their 2 or 3 favorite Hints on making these airplanes. It doesn't have to be anything particularly esoteric, just some lessons learned(You know, like don't buy the Glencoe Albatros). Here are my 2: 1. Get a lighted magnifying glass. These can be bought in most stores where there are a lot of different lighting fixtures. I think these things might be called jewelers lamps. It makes working with detail soooo much easier for those of us whose eyes are beginning to desert them; 2. To get a wood look, paint the part with the Model Masters wood. Let it drying and then use Poly Scale Brown (8E8). Apply it by using a sponge like paint applicator that can be found at any K-Mart,WAl-Mart, etc. The are usually used for finishing corners etc. Anyway, just put a small amount on the sponge, and then spread it over the painted part. Keep"brushing" with the sponge until you get the desired depth of color and "grain" apppearance. Works great for propellers, struts and even Albatros bodies. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Jul 1996 11:54:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Erik Pilawskii To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Fokker DVII database Message-ID: On Fri, 26 Jul 1996, August T. BUT, I have several projects on the go, at least one of which was started pretty much concurrently with my joining this list 15 months ago. My main interests are W.W.I aviation, especially German, and Manfred von Richthofen and J.G.1. I've been interested in these since about 1990. I have a collection of W.W.I aviation relics and related books. I'm always looking for more relics and enjoy trading information. My modeling career isn't so successful... how many plastic Fokker triplanes crumbled in my hands?... but I do enjoy modeling now and then. With all of this 'we're not worthy stuff', I thought I'd spare Steve the embarrassment, but how long have I EVER been able to resist that? Please join me in congratulating our friend Steve Hustad for his success at a figure (go figure!) convention in Oklahoma (I've forgotten the name of the show. Help me out here, Steve). At figure conventions, apparently, they judge the modeler's display - however many items that may include. For his entry consisting of six figure dioramas, vignettes and single figures, Steve received one of three Outstanding Exhibitors awards and a Gold Medal. Way to go Steve! I believe that all of Steve's work displayed had a German WWI theme, right Steve? I just started my D.II. I'm in the middle of doing an Aurora D-Va(I know, I know, it's more of a D-III but at least the tail looks right) and am waiting on some salmon colored rib tapes for the bottom wings. So, I decided to do the D.II. So far, all I've done is cut the parts off the tree and started to trim'fit them. Any suggestions? Where the wings meet the fuselage on the bottom wing, it seems like theres a ditch between fuselage and wing. Same with yours? Fill it in with putty? Leave it alone? The rest seems simple enough, but then again, I'm not really into heavy modifications. Thanks for any help.
