I'll be there; booked the hotel room in April. I'll be touring the Museum itself on Friday, then back for the fly-in on Saturday, then to Dayton International for the airshow on Sunday. Yeah, I know, wrong war, suck-and-blow jobs instead of real planes with props, but I can't pass up the Blue Angels. For recognition, I'll wear my Midwest Cross & Cockade name badge. Looking forward to meeting any and all from the list, on any of the three days. The instructions say the plane in scheme A is in dark green dope, and I'm wondering if: (1) this is supposed to be NIVO, and (2) what is a good color match for this. Ah, now ya got a problem! Except for maybe the 1/32 hobbycraft kit of the Nieuport 17, there are, AFAIK, no 'modern' kits of these 3 aircraft. But, if ya' want 'em all in the same scale, I think the SPAD VII is the 'choke point' which with the kits from the 'major' manufacturers is limited to the old Heller 1/40th and the old Airfix 1/72. Neither is a great kit and the Heller kit is weird scale and matches nothing. The airfix kit is, perhaps, salvagable although -something- has to be done with its 'wash board' wings and I've never quite been able to figure out exactly what. Assuming you can correct or accept the airfix SPAD VII, then the 1/72 Revell and the Esci/Ertl/ Eldon/Fujimi/etc Nieuport 17 kits are usable and fixable and the Merlin Nieuport 11 is one of Merlin's better kits. So that might be the way to go. In 1/48th, the Aurora/Merit/Artiplast/Smer kits of the Nieuport 11 are not too bad and can be fixed with some work - likewise the Hawk/Testors kit of the Nieuport 17. But there is, so far as I know, no SPAD VII kit available in that scale. The Heller SPAD VII in 1/40th would look decidedly odd next to the 1/48th Nieuport kits. And, in 1/32, only the Nieuport 17 kit from Hobbycraft is or has been available - no 1/32 Nieuport 11's or SPAD VII's have ever been produced AFAIK. Now, if I didn't care about constant scale, I'd probably build the Hobbycraft 1/32 N.17, the Smer 1/48 N.11, and the Heller 1/40 SPAD VII as the best of a mediocre bunch. But you want constant scale. So, I'd guess your best bet is 1/72 scale with the Revell Nieuport 17, the Merlin Nieuport 11 and the Airfix SPAD VII. -All- three kits will require some work if you're looking for an accurate replica but they are probably 'do-able' although I'm still unsure about the Airfix SPAD VII. >And >where is the best place to go for Laf. Esc. color schemes-- The color schemes are pretty standard - either cream or two-colored camouflage for the N.11's, silver (aluminum) dope on the N.17's and overall yellow or 5-color for the SPAD VII's. Check out the photos - the specific scheme used on a particular aircraft should be fairly apparent.
