My 2 year old (just) son has greeted me about 5 evenings in the last week by yelling "Daddy....aeroplane, bunny" and rushing off in the direction of my display shelves. By way of explanation I should say that my current project is Gefreiter Scheutzels Fokker D.VII "die Seiben Swabe" (sp?) which features a rather nice rabbit graphic on the side. I've been bringing my daughter (25 months) into my modeling room with me for quite some time now - of course, not while I'm working! I show her what I'm working on and tell her all about it and try to get her to pronounce 'aileron' or 'fuselage' to which whe usually makes a valiant if unintelligible attempt. Lately, I've been showing her unbuilt model kits. I'll open the closet door and ask her if she'd like to see one. She always says yes, so I pull a couple off of the shelf and she climbs on my lap. I tell her what kind of airplane it is and pull out the parts, show them to her and name some of them. She touches the wheels and says "beep". She'll take a sprue and "zoom" it around making airplane noises. Hhmmm, I wonder where she got that one? Lately, she has even taken to saying "OOOOHH" when we open a particularly nice kit. When she sees or hears an an aircraft fly over head, she looks up, points and says "apane"! That one, she obviously gets from my wife! You can never start them too early! [other than being quite blasphemous, slovenly, and just all-round not a nice thing, at all] It's one of the ongoing 'humorous threads' of this insane group to have a "flame war" about scale preference. Indeed, some of our most enlightened bretheren actually 'profane' themselves occasionally in this gigantic ratio (we needn't name names, nor tell tales-- suffice to say that He with the largest number of assembled Merlin kits mayest be He that is guilty!). Some of our most enlightened brethren also go around quoting Monty Python. Just goes to show ya.... Now if it were Red Dwarf, it might show a bit more evolution. Unfortunately I got mine third hand, and it was just two vacuform sheets - no instructions and if there were any metal/etch parts, they are missing. I kind of doubt that there are any, it doesn't need any. The instructions would be damn nice to have though. I have managed to get rigging diagrams from elsewhere. WWI Aero had a nice drawing a few issues ago, and recently someone passed me a photocopy of the Windsockpiece. The Windsock looks to be from an early issue, but my copy is not noted with issue #. I can tell it was what the Rosemont kit is based upon. I have found that a Royal Navy handbook on balloons and an August Reidinger Sales catalog have been the most help to me. And not to be nasty - but I'm not gonna tell you how I'm doing this, because I want it to be a surprise at the IPMS Nationals in Virginia Beach. And If I show up without - I went insane over the rigging and crushed it... - Brian Nicklas ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jun 1996 07:56:16 +0000 From: mrandall@INNOVA.WA.COM (David M. Although he got over it, he too loves opening up my boxes of models and looking through the parts and decals. A question for all you veteran modelers. This DrI was my first, and I painted it in the scheme of 588/17 if you know which one that is. It was supposed to be the "Kennst mi noch?" tripe but: Question #1, is it ok to take liberties in re-painting a model that was designed to be a specific s/n? Has anyone ever done this before? Ok, I suppose the answer is a resounding yes, that was my newbie modeler question that I don't really need an answer to. What I do need an answer to is how long should a 1/48 model such as the Fok Tripe take to build? Man, it seemed like forever for me. Really, it took what seemed to be a very long time. An, not to get too long winded with questions, but is there some consensus about airbrush vs brush? Per the Windsock, 588/17 had a blue painted fuselage/tail/wings with overpainted olive on the top and side surfaces. It sure seems like it would have been easier to airbrush the blue and brush the olive. Any thoughts? My data base doesn't show the WWI Aero reference. It must be in the stack of unindexed stuff that I will get around to someday. By all means, bring the model to Virginia Beach. There is an urgent need for a variety of models to offset the expected 500 Messerschmitt 109s.
