As far as I know the tape is the the same basic material
as the fabric covering. The tape is doped down.

This I don't know. I know that in reading my Rumpler C.IV
datafile last night that some of the C.IV's had fabric
covered areas replaced by plywood. It did not indicate
whether the ply was then covered with fabric or painetd.
