There was extensive effort on the part of the Royal Flying Corps, later
RAF to develop night fighter technology. First efforts were to combat
Zepplin bombers using a variety of aircraft, mostly unsuitable to the
task such as Be-2s of various models. Later when the Gotha bombers
switched to night bombing (daylight losses were too high) more effedtive
aircraft were employed such as the Sopwith Camel "Comic" conversions.

Much of this is covered in a book in the Putnam series from
England. The title is "The air defense of Britain". The author escapes
my memory, but the book is still in print and costs about $50.00.
