Scott H. asked why pilots defeated an benefit camouflage may have provided by
over-painting their aircraft with gaudy markings and colours.

You could also ask the same question of many aircrew during WW2. Many
aircraft carried distinctive markings, the number of "kills" and quite often
the names of crew members.

In the event of a successful crash landing, the opposing side then knows who
you are and how good you were in destroying (killing) their compatriots.

People do odd things.
