I would venture to say that an Me109 pilot that got close enough to ascertain
those type markings probably already knew what he was up against.
Morale boosting, in this case "boasting", is very important. Pilots are
taught to identify enemy aircraft by "silhouette" (sp?) as are ground troops
that may have to engage aircraft. Same applies to land vehicles.
