Maurice Farman MF.11

Canada Air Museum

Lance Krieg took the following photos at the Canada Air Museum during 2002

The underside of this machine is wood; seems like other early Farmans were fabric underneath? And there is a concavity to the machine's bottom to encourage airflow to the cooling fan of the Renault (?) engine. Struts use a familiar blue/gray tape, and are additionally protected by asbestos where they are near the hot engine. Gas tank is copper. Picketing rings beneath front outboard interplane strut location.

The control runs are all activated from the lower wing, and this is a closed loop system. The aileron control exits the nacelle from the elevator quadrant, passes to the wing tip pulleys to gain mechanical advantage, and thence to the ailerons themselves. The very loose control runs would make me think that these ailerons are tensioned by the airflow, but perhaps this is a museum anomaly?
