RAF FE.2b

Kit: Aeroclub (1:48)

I completed the Fee in August 2002. The build article appeared in the August 2002 issue of the Internet modeler.

Initial build shots

This is the Aeroclub 1:48 injection moulded kit.  I am currently in the process of detailing the nacelle.  The amount of time, effort, and money spent on research and build of each successive project has been going up exponentially.

Photo shows work in progress on some of the assemblies including nacelle frame, radiator air-scoop, pilot's cockpit back wall. The seat is styrene sheet and milliput.  The engine is rebuilt from the crankcase up.

Tail Booms : Booms are steel music wire. Struts are .015 in. steel music wire. All joints are soldered. After soldering, I sandwiched the struts in veneer and sanded to shape.

Cockpit : Cockpit just before joining the halves. All interior furnishing is fresh-built except for the rudder-pedal bar, and the instrument faces. Note the pulleys for the rudder cable runs. The seat is hung on a strip of Aluminium for easy positioning. The engine and radiator will hide this and the void under the seat. Gun mount, clasps, RL tube, and other detail in the observers pit will be added in the final stages.

Gravity fuel tanks : Made these from styrene tubing and sheet. Note the difference between the Datafile and the kit supplied tank.

Sopwith Baby

Kit: Eduard (1:48)

This is the 1:48 Eduard Sopwith Baby. My article on its build is in the Jan 2002 issue of the Internet Modeler. I replaced the rear fuselage with styrene skin over brass framework.
