Holland Submarine SM U-5

Kit: Weiner Modellbau (1:350)

This model is of the U-boat commanded by Kapitan Georg Ritter von Trapp of the K.U.K Marine in 1915. I heard about this kit on the e-mail list and found it an irresistible subject because of its famous captain and his "Sound of Music" associations. It is the first naval subject I have completed. This kit proved to be pretty challenging for me just because of the very small size and delicate nature of the PE parts. Each blade of the screws, for instance, is a separate brass part that must be positioned and angled correctly. You are supplied with 2 sets of decals, and I was glad of that because I needed them. They did not want to conform to the surfaces and cracked easily. I used brass rod for the stanchions and stretched sprue connects them. The completed model is only about 4" long. This compares to 7" for U-35 and 13" for the Emden in the same scale. The instructions have a fairly detailed history of these boats and some photos of them as well.
